I have been waiting to binge-watch this series for the past few weeks and recently I was finally able to watch the last episode. I had high expectations about this series given the type of intriguing story they wanted to tell and also due to the presence of some high-profile cast members whose presence usually means the production is worth watching.

However, I was left a little bit disappointed with this show. It seemed like the writers had some blurry ideas for the story and the development of the plot appeared to lack proper direction during the majority of the time. The potential for a great intriguing series is certainly there, but the execution left much to be desired. The series isn't bad, but it feels like a beta version instead of the final one.

What was the series about?

The series takes place in a luxury health and wellness resort managed by the mysterious Masha. She chooses the people who attend the resort out of all of the people who request it, and once they get there their phones are taken away so they can really disconnect from their everyday lives.

The people go to that place usually to receive help in overcoming different types of personal issues, traumas, and problematic things like that. Masha is considered a guru and a person with knowledge about all types of techniques to help her clients. Some of those techniques can also be considered extreme, and even immoral as well as illegal. She works in that place with 3 other people who assist her so there are 4 people in total working in the wellness resort.

The 9 clients are very varied. We will see a rich young guy with an Instagrammer as a girlfriend, a family, a frustrated writer with a very bad recent experience, a retired football player, a divorced woman who's going through a tough time, and another guy who recently broke up with his partner.

The wellness center is supposed to be a very relaxing place so the clients can rest their minds and bodies, but that's not what happens in this case. As time goes on, the clients are put in very bizarre situations that can be stressful instead of relaxing. All of this is supposed to have a therapeutic effect on them according to the guru but the methods they use are really weird and it would be hard to understand why someone would pay for this.

As time goes on, more extreme situations will take place in the resort. There will be fights, near-death experiences, hallucinations, and a couple of twists that felt anti-climatic and badly designed.

The series will actually have more than 1 twist but there was only 1 that was really surprising but sadly it ended in nothing. There are plotholes as well, and the story as a whole felt like a preliminary version and not like the final one. It wasn't polished enough and it seemed like the writers wanted to cover too many different things and ultimately, they were unable to do so in a satisfactory manner.

Some of the characters have hidden agendas but every single one has suffered emotional pain in one way or another, and the time they will share in the resort will end up being life-changing for them. For the viewer, this is an easily forgettable story that had the potential to be great but lost its way.

The series director is Jonathan Levine, he directed all 8 episodes of the show and he must be very good friends with the popular actor Seth Rogen because the main movies he has previously directed have all been with Seth as a member of the cast, these movies are 50/50, Long Shot and The Night Before.

The series had several writers but only 2 of those participated in all 8 episodes. The main one is David E. Kelley. He has a lot of experience working as a writer and some of his previous work has been in the series Big Sky, Goliath, and the 2 most important ones, The Undoing, and Big Little Lies.

The other writer was John-Henry Butterworth. This person doesn't have that much experience as a writer but he has so far worked in a couple of great productions such as Edge of Tomorrow and Ford v Ferrari.

Nicole Kidman is the main member of the cast and she plays the mysterious Masha, the woman in charge of the wellness resort. This is a strange character with Russian origins and a very weird personality. There are some secrets about her past that will be revealed as the show advances. A couple of good films with Nicole Kidman that many people might not know about are The Stepford Wives and The Killing of a Sacred Deer.

Melissa McCarthy is an actress who got popular thanks to her comedy roles. That's the genre that suits her best and her presence in comedies usually means the viewer will have some laughs watching the film. In other genres, she isn't that great in my opinion. In Nine Perfect Strangers, she plays a frustrated writer with a little trauma due to a recent personal failure. Some good comedies with this actress are Spy and Identity Thief.

Michael Shannon plays a family dad. They all recently went through a very traumatic and tragic experience and decided to go to this wellness resort to try to overcome their issues. Some previous productions with this actor are Take Shelter and Midnight Special.

Luke Evans plays another important character in the series. He is there simply to investigate the resort and nothing more. We can find this actor in other well-known productions such as High-Rise and Dracula Untold.

How were the performance from the cast, the scenery and the camera work?

The performance from the cast was regular. There were some good moments and others that weren't too convincing. Nicole Kidman's performance was bad mainly because she pretended to be a Russian character and her weirdness didn't seem authentic. The rest of the characters were much more believable and spontaneous.

The scenery was nice but it could have been better. For a luxury wellness resort, there weren't so many great views. The camera work wasn't very special either and there were even some scenes where a good camera work would have improved the immersion of the viewer. Everything was very average and felt like a bit of wasted potential. Again, the series isn't bad, I would say it is an acceptable watch but it could have been so much better.

Final thoughts

My expectation for this series was to enjoy a cool mystery thriller slowly develop into an intense ending. The series does indeed have mysteries but the story was too convoluted, messy, with plotholes, and with impactful twists that are quickly discarded and forgotten about. The series might be worth watching for mystery lovers, but the story is far from achieving its full potential.

Mi expectativa para esta serie era disfrutar de un thriller de misterio genial que poco a poco tendría un final intenso. Y bueno, de hecho la serie tiene misterios, pero la historia era demasiado complicada, desordenada, con agujeros de trama y con giros impactantes que rápidamente se descartan y se olvidan. Puede que valga la pena ver la serie para los amantes del misterio, pero la historia está lejos de alcanzar su máximo potencial.
