In the past couple of years, I have seen a lot of Spanish productions but when it comes to Catalan productions I don't remember having seen any before, much less an animated Catalan production.

Nocturna intrigued me with its unique art style and the plot that looked like a cool little fantasy story that could make some viewers compare them with films from Studio Ghibli. Discovering this little gem took me by surprise but I know there will always be good films that aren't as popular as they deserve to be. Nocturna is one example of this in my opinion.

Main names associated with the film

There aren't very popular people involved in the creation of this film. Adrià García and Víctor Maldonado worked as directors, writers, and art directors, they are the main creators of the film. Garcia's career is very small, he has only worked in this film and as a director in a recent little-known film called My Family and the Wolf. Maldonado, on the other hand, has worked as a writer in that same film, My Family and the Wolf, and as a director for 3 episodes of the cool series Love, Death, and Robots. This is all of their experience as writers and directors, is not much, but if they created Nocturna I am sure they can create many more good stories.

There is a third writer involved in the film named Teresa Vilardell, she is the most experienced writer of the 3 and she began her writing career in the early 90s. Most of her jobs as a writer have been in local Catalan productions that aren't very relevant in the international scene. The most recent one is a film called L'enigma Verdaguer. The majority of her works are from the 90s and the 2000s, in the past decade she only worked in 2 productions so maybe she has retired by now.

There is little to be said about the cast because they only did voice acting but I really loved the original Spanish audio and there were a lot of jokes throughout the movie that makes it even more enjoyable.

What was the movie about?

The film follows a very special and unforgettable night in the life of a kid named Tim living in an orphanage. This kid is extremely afraid of the dark and he loves seeing the stars at night because he feels accompanied by them.

En los últimos años he visto muchas producciones españolas, pero cuando se trata de producciones catalanas no recuerdo haber visto ninguna antes, y mucho menos una producción catalana animada.

Nocturna me intrigó con su estilo artístico único y la trama que parecía una pequeña historia fantástica que podría hacer que algunos espectadores las compararan con películas de Studio Ghibli. Descubrir esta pequeña joya me tomó por sorpresa, pero sé que siempre habrá buenas películas que no son tan populares como se merecen. Nocturna es un ejemplo de esto en mi opinión.

Nombres principales asociados con la película

No hay gente muy popular involucrada en la creación de esta película. Adrià García y Víctor Maldonado trabajaron como directores, escritores y directores de arte, son los principales creadores de la película. La carrera de García es muy pequeña, solo ha trabajado en esta película y como director en una película reciente poco conocida llamada Mi familia y el lobo. Maldonado, por su parte, ha trabajado como guionista en esa misma película, Mi familia y el lobo, y como director de 3 episodios de la genial serie Love, death and robots. Esta es toda su experiencia como escritores y directores, no es mucha, pero si crearon Nocturna estoy seguro de que pueden crear muchas más buenas historias.

Hay una tercera escritora involucrada en la película llamada Teresa Vilardell, es la escritora más experimentada de las 3 y comenzó su carrera como escritora a principios de los 90. Hay poco que decir sobre el elenco porque solo hicieron la actuación de voz, pero realmente me encantó el audio original en español y hubo muchas bromas a lo largo de la película que la hacen aún más agradable.

¿De qué trataba la película?

La película sigue una noche muy especial e inolvidable en la vida de un niño llamado Tim que vive en un orfanato. Este niño le tiene mucho miedo a la oscuridad y le encanta ver las estrellas de noche porque se siente acompañado por ellas.

One day, by mistake, he kicks a ball and it goes to the dark basement. When the other kids tell him to recover the ball he lost, he tries to do it but is unable due to his fear of the dark. As a consequence, the other kids get very mad at him. Tim used to watch the stars at night through his window, but that particular night, he's forced to go to the rooftop because the window wasn't opening, it didn't have its doorknob.

So there goes little Tim to the rooftop to watch the stars so he can then go to his bed and sleep peacefully. He has a favorite star and he focuses on it for a while, when suddenly, something inexplicable happens. His favorite star suddenly disappears, just like that. Poof, gone. This spook Tim but if that wasn't enough, then another star disappears, and then another one. It seems stars are dying or simply turning themselves off for some reason.

Here is where the big fantasy part of the movie begins. Tim will suddenly encounter a big friendly creature known as the shepherd of cats, who is always surrounded by cats. This creature directs the cats and makes sure they meow to the kids during the night so they can sleep peacefully.

It turns out, there is something called the Night World, where a lot of unique creatures make sure the night events happen as they should. These creatures aren't evil, they just make sure people have dreams, and sleep correctly, some creatures even have the responsibility of messing up people's hair while they sleep, others are responsible for stealing socks that are lost forever. All the silly night events that people can't explain are caused by these creatures of the Night World and all the comedy in the film is related to these creatures. This film isn't necessarily a comedy movie, but it does have several funny dialogues throughout the story, and some touching moments as well.

Once Tim discovers the shepherd of cats, he will inform him about the disappearance of stars but the creature doesn't pay much attention to him. It is the responsibility of the shepherd of cats to make Tim go back to sleep, but the only way Tim accepts this is by fixing the problem that's making stars disappear.

They will begin a journey together exploring the Night World and trying to figure out what's really happening in this place. The creativity in designing all the night creatures is remarkable, there is a whole civilization hidden from regular people that come to work during these hours, and it was very lovely to see so many unique fantasy elements come together in this cool story.

Como consecuencia, los otros niños se enojan mucho con él. Tim solía mirar las estrellas por la noche a través de su ventana, pero esa noche en particular, se vio obligado a ir a la azotea porque la ventana no se abría, no tenía el pomo.

Así que el pequeño Tim sube a la azotea para mirar las estrellas y luego ir a su cama y dormir tranquilamente. Tiene una estrella favorita y se concentra en ella durante un tiempo, cuando de repente sucede algo inexplicable. Su estrella favorita desaparece de repente, así tal cual. Puf, se fue. There is a villain in this story of course, but its nature remains a mystery during most of the film although some viewers might figure out its origins early on. Some elements of the film reminded me of Harry Potter, while others reminded me of the movie The Truman Show.

The story is, in its most basic interpretation, about self-growth and overcoming fears. It does have some moments that could be scary for younger audiences, but the film is good for all ages and the ending will leave all the viewers satisfied. I wish the creators continued to make animated films but it seems this was just a one-time experiment.

How were the settings and the quality of the animation?

The settings were extremely good. Watching the night city with all those unique creatures and all of the mysteries was a fun experience. In their journey, the main characters will visit several places and all of them provided unique creative elements that enriched the story. The settings, coupled with the variety of characters was wonderful to watch.

The quality of the animation was also good, the film is from 2007 but it doesn't feel like an outdated animation. Sometimes I did notice the lips of the characters weren't entirely synced with the audio, but I guess this is normal to happen in animated productions. I thought I was watching a dubbed version but it seems the original audio is Spanish.

Final thoughts

This was an excellent animated fantasy film that I recommend watching. It provides a unique story, unique creatures, and this results in a very fun experience. When comparing this film with those from Studio Ghibli, the 2 that are most similar in some way are Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro. So, if you enjoyed those 2 films you should definitely give Nocturna a watch because you will most likely enjoy it too.

En su recorrido, los personajes principales visitarán varios lugares y todos ellos aportaron elementos creativos únicos que enriquecieron la historia. La ambientación, junto con la variedad de personajes, fue maravillosa de ver.

La calidad de la animación también fue buena, la película es de 2007 pero no se siente como una animación desactualizada. A veces noté que los labios de los personajes no estaban completamente sincronizados con el audio, pero supongo que esto es normal en las producciones animadas. Pensé que estaba viendo una versión doblada, pero parece que el audio original es español.

Reflexiones finales

Esta fue una excelente película de fantasía animada que recomiendo ver. Proporciona una historia única, criaturas únicas y esto resulta en una experiencia muy divertida. Al comparar esta película con las de Studio Ghibli, las 2 que más se parecen de alguna manera son El viaje de Chihiro y Mi vecino Totoro. Entonces, si disfrutaste esas 2 películas, definitivamente deberías ver a Nocturna porque lo más probable es que también lo disfrutes.
