Nowadays it is normal to constantly see remakes, reboots, prequels, and obviously sequels as well of successful old franchises that were kind of forgotten by many in the public. There is even an example with the Justice League films where there are 2 different versions of the same film. A few weeks ago there were 2 movies released, Scream 5 and the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre, that are the perfect example of this normalization of reboots, remakes, and sequels after many many years, etc.

The one that interested me the most was Scream, I remember being scared of Ghostface when I was a kid. The horror character that scared me the most was Samara from The Ring but Ghostface was very creepy for me as well.

In recent times, I haven't watched any of the latest Scream films, so I went into this one with little to no knowledge about the state of the story. I simply wanted to watch this popular horror character once again.

What was the movie about?

The movie begins with the typical scene in horror productions when there is a young girl alone in her house at night, and suddenly something creepy begins to happen. The vulnerability of the girl who is all alone has been exploited so much in horror productions, that I believe it doesn't invoke the same intense feelings as it did in the past.

Since I didn't remember much about the previous Scream films, I was a bit lost regarding the chronology of the previous events, however, there are some key dialogue lines that will certainly help viewers put all the necessary in their proper place. We quickly get familiar with the young characters, and soon enough, we begin to try to figure out who is behind the scary Ghostface mask. Legacy characters also made an appearance and will be key in the story as well.

There were a lot of meta dialogues and at times it felt like nonstop self-references, not only to the Scream franchise but to horror in general as well as to the entertainment industry. I guess this was how the writers decided to attempt an innovative approach, but it didn't quite work in my opinion. This is particularly overdone when the young cast members are trying to figure out the identity of the killer or killers. They are sure it must be one person very close to the group.

The fights with Ghostface weren't very convincing, and there was one particular moment when Ghostface clearly holds his attempt at stabbing a new victim because the choreography f the fight required some resistance at that moment. Not only that, but there were also some characters that were easy to distract, and didnçt make use of all their senses when knowing Ghostface was near them. This obviously resulted in some easy to avoid and silly deaths.

Hace algunas semanas se estrenaron 2 películas, Scream 5 y la nueva Texas Chainsaw Massacre, que son el ejemplo perfecto de esta normalización de reboots, remakes y secuelas después de muchos, muchos años, etc.

El que más me interesó fue Scream, recuerdo que cuando era niño le tenía miedo a Ghostface. El personaje de terror que más me asustó fue Samara de The Ring, pero Ghostface también me dio mucho miedo.

En los últimos tiempos, no he visto ninguna de las últimas películas de Scream, así que entré en esta con poco o ningún conocimiento sobre el estado de la historia. Simplemente quería ver a este popular personaje de terror una vez más.

¿De qué trataba la película?

La película comienza con la típica escena en las producciones de terror cuando hay una joven sola en su casa por la noche, y de repente algo espeluznante comienza a suceder. La vulnerabilidad de la chica que está sola se ha explotado tanto en las producciones de terror, que creo que no invoca los mismos sentimientos intensos que en el pasado.

Como no recordaba mucho sobre las películas anteriores de Scream, estaba un poco perdido con respecto a la cronología de los eventos anteriores, sin embargo, hay algunas líneas de diálogo clave que sin duda ayudarán a los espectadores a poner todo lo necesario en su lugar. Another thing I didn't like was how some characters were able to move almost like normal minutes after receiving a gunshot, showing impressive physical resistance, but on other occasions, a character easily goes unconscious after simply being pushed into a door, this time, showing very little physical resistance.

The film could be considered a bit suspenseful at times, but for any experienced horror fan, I don't think this movie will provide much tension or anything similar. I don't regret watching it because I was in the mood for a slasher but I certainly won't be watching it again, and it kind of reminded me why slashers' films are far from being my favorites.

Main names associated with the film

The film had 2 directors that tend to work together but they don't always do. They are Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. Some of the previous films created by them working together are Ready or Not, Soundbound, and Devil's Due.

James Vanderbilt was one of the writers of the story. He has worked as a writer in more than 10 different productions since his career began in the early 2000s, and recently he worked in Murder Mystery, Independence Day: Resurgence, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Guy Busick was the other writer, he doesn't have as much experience as James, but he has participated in great productions such as Castle Rock, Ready or Not and Stan Against Evil.

Melissa Barrera plays the main character, Sam Carpenter, she is the older sister of the girl that gets attacked in the first scene of the film. There is also info about her past that is related to previous Scream films. We can find this actress in In the Heights, Vida, and Dos Veces Tu.

Jack Quaid played her boyfriend, Richie Kirsch. He seems like a nice guy however no one is out of suspicion in this film. I immediately recognized this actor thanks to his role in The Boys series. He also participated in Rampage and Logan Lucky.

Otra cosa que no me gustó fue cómo algunos personajes podían moverse casi tipo normal minutos después de recibir un disparo, mostrando una resistencia física impresionante, pero en otras ocasiones, un personaje fácilmente queda inconsciente después de simplemente ser empujado contra una puerta, esta vez, mostrando muy poca resistencia física.

La película podría considerarse un poco de suspenso a veces, pero para cualquier fanático del terror experimentado, no creo que esta película proporcione mucha tensión o algo similar. No me arrepiento de haberla visto porque estaba de humor para un slasher, pero ciertamente no volveré a verla, y me recordó por qué las películas de slashers están lejos de ser mis favoritas.

However, being the type of movie it is, it doesn't provide many opportunities for the cast members to show their true skills. Many times the characters need to play dumb for the "surprising" and "scary" things to happen and this gets a bit tiresome after a while.

When it comes to the writing, they were aware this type of production is mostly a repetition or a new iteration of the same thing that happened before, and they try to take advantage of this self-awareness and included a bunch of meta dialogues throughout the film. The amount of self-references was very high, and it made clear the industry itself notices its obsession with reboots, remakes, etc...

Final thoughts

Scream 5 provided me with what I was looking so I wasn't disappointed but I do think this type of movie is getting obsolete for modern audiences. After so many slashers, it is now not easy to provide new surprises or ways to create an impact on the viewer. It becomes a bit easy to guess what will happen next.

In this film, for example, I was able to guess one of the supposedly surprising revelations. The film tries to confuse the viewer regarding the identity of the villains, and it makes a good job in some parts but not always.

All in all, it was the type of slasher I was expecting. This isn't my favorite genre or anything like that, but I was in the mood to watch one and Scream was a good option. For people who really like slashers, I believe this film should be a good choice to watch.

La cantidad de autoreferencias fue muy alta, y quedó claro que la propia industria nota su obsesión por los reboots, remakes, etc...

Reflexiones finales

Scream 5 me proporcionó lo que estaba buscando, así que no me decepcionó, pero creo que este tipo de película se está volviendo obsoleta para el público moderno. Después de tantos slashers, ahora no es fácil brindar nuevas sorpresas o formas de crear impacto en el espectador. Se vuelve un poco fácil adivinar qué sucederá a continuación.

En esta película, por ejemplo, pude adivinar una de las revelaciones supuestamente sorprendentes. La película trata de confundir al espectador con respecto a la identidad de los villanos, y hace un buen trabajo en algunas partes, pero no siempre.

Con todo, era el tipo de slasher que esperaba. Este no es mi género favorito ni nada por el estilo, pero tenía ganas de ver uno y Scream era una buena opción. Para las personas a las que realmente les gustan los slashers, creo que esta película debería ser una buena opción para ver.
