I am pretty sure Marvel movies are considered as the best superhero movies there are by most people, and thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), some of Marvel superheroes achieved levels of popularity that could rival and even surpass that of their counterparts in the DC Comics universe.

Joining so many different superheroes in single movies with epic stories and very challenging villains such as Ultron or Thanos was surely a blast for everyone who loves this type of film. However, as their stories advance, it becomes necessary to start exploring new characters, powers, and villains in order to keep everything fresh and prevent the viewers from getting bored.

The main character of this movie was probably one of the least popular characters from the MCU up to this date but I believe this will change after this film and I will be hoping for this character to appear in future Marvel films.

What was the movie about?

The MCU is already advanced enough that suddenly finding a story with ancient origins and powers that no one else knew about can be quite the surprise. The power of the ten rings goes back several millenniums ago, and if you think about it, a good question would be why the person in control of those rings never helped the avengers fight against powerful villains like Ultron or Thanos. The fact this ancient character didn't participate in any of those battles where the world was at stake is very hard to understand.

Anyways, this ancient character is immortal thanks to the power of the rings and will remain immortal as long as he uses these rings. For a while, he lived a normal family life with no immortality and no powers, but a family tragedy happens, that will cause him to start using the rings once again.

Now, have in mind these rings aren't like the ring in the Lord of the Rings' story, what I mean by that is that these rings don't make the person do evil stuff. They simply give important powers but they don't necessarily corrupt the person's integrity.

This ancient man was immortal once again, and due to the tragedy, he became harsher and more strict than ever before. So much so, that eventually, his remaining family members decide to abandon him and start a new life away from him.

Estoy bastante seguro de que las películas de Marvel son consideradas como las mejores películas de superhéroes que hay por la mayoría de la gente, y gracias al Universo Cinematográfico de Marvel (MCU), algunos de los superhéroes de Marvel alcanzaron niveles de popularidad que podrían rivalizar e incluso superar la de sus contrapartes en el universo de DC Comics.

Unir a tantos superhéroes diferentes en películas únicas con historias épicas y villanos muy desafiantes como Ultrón o Thanos fue sin duda una explosión de entusiasmo para todos los que aman este tipo de películas. Sin embargo, a medida que sus historias avanzan, se hace necesario comenzar a explorar nuevos personajes, poderes y villanos para mantener todo fresco y evitar que los espectadores se aburran.

El poder de los diez anillos se remonta a varios milenios atrás, y si se piensa en ello, una buena pregunta sería por qué la persona que controla esos anillos nunca ayudó a los vengadores a luchar contra poderosos villanos como Ultrón o Thanos. El hecho de que este antiguo personaje no participara en ninguna de esas batallas donde el mundo estaba en juego es muy difícil de entender.

De todas formas, este antiguo personaje es inmortal gracias al poder de los anillos y seguirá siendo inmortal mientras utilice estos anillos. Durante un tiempo, vivió una vida familiar normal sin inmortalidad y sin poderes, pero ocurre una tragedia familiar que hará que empiece a usar los anillos una vez más.

His son, Shang Chi, is the main character of the film, and he looks like a regular guy making a living in America working as a valet. One day and completely unexpectedly, his past comes back to catch him and his life will change forever.

It has been many years since the last time he had contact with either his father or his sister, and suddenly we will see the entire family reunited once again. We will learn about the past of this family, and the reason for this reunion will become clear soon enough.

As the story advances, we will even discover a new world/reality with animals that are very different from ours and where magic is a normal thing. I really like what they did with this new world because everything looked so nice and well-designed.

The action scenes throughout the movie were very entertaining with an awesome soundtrack, and with some fighting moves that reminded me of Jackie Chan. It was been a while since the last time I saw a good fighting scene without superpowers, but this movie provided some excellent fights before any superpower is revealed and used.

The new power that gets introduced in the MCU is very promising and we now have a new and very useful superhero whose importance will surely increase when the next villain arrives. I believe the MCU is growing and transitioning organically with the introduction of new key characters such as Shang Chi, and even though the main villain of this film wasn't super challenging, I am sure that with the introduction of the multiverse we will be seeing some really crazy stuff in the upcoming productions.

Marvel has really challenging years coming for them because important characters such as Iron Man, the first Captain America, and Black Widow aren't longer available, and substituting them with new ones will surely not be easy. However, if their next productions are as good as Shang Chi, then this transition will most likely be successful.

Main names associated with the film

Destin Daniel Cretton worked as a director and was also one of the writers for this film. Some of his previous works from recent years are the films Just Mercy and The Glass Castle, in which Andrew Lanham, one of the other writers also participated.

Su hijo, Shang Chi, es el protagonista de la película, y parece un tipo normal que se gana la vida en Estados Unidos trabajando como aparcacoches. Un día y de forma totalmente inesperada, su pasado vuelve a atraparlo y su vida cambiará para siempre.

The remaining writer is Dave Callaham, who is very experienced in creating action stories. In recent years, he has worked as a writer in many great films such as Wonder Woman 1984, Mortal Kombat, Godzilla, among many others.

The main character of the film is played by Simu Liu. I don't remember ever seeing this actor before but thanks to this role he will surely become quite popular in the entertainment industry. He previously appeared in the series Kim's Convenience and Yappie. In this film, he plays the son of a very powerful man owner of an ancient empire, and most importantly, the owner of the legendary 10 rings.

Awkwafina plays his best friend, and this is an actress I did remember seeing at least a couple of times in other productions, such as Crazy Rich Asians, Ocean's 8, and The Farewell. In this film, she plays a regular girl that will become somehow special after she decides to accompany her friend on a very fantastic and magical journey.

How were the performance from the cast, the scenery and the camera work?

The performances from the cast were great all around. Something Marvel has done quite successfully since their first movies is the addition of some comedic moments that don’t devalue either the plot or the action scenes. In some action movies, they focus so much on making people laugh that the entire story and authenticity of the characters get damaged. This doesn’t usually happen in Marvel productions. The actress Awkwafina had some funny moments using her typical acting style, and a couple of other characters were also funny at times.

The scenery and CGI were excellent. The new world that gets explored was very well done and their special animals and beings were perfectly designed. I didn’t expect this story to be so ambitious and it was surprising seeing so many new things being revealed. Something similar can be said about the camera work, although being a Marvel super-production it shouldn’t be surprising their camera work was world-class.

Final thoughts

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was an excellent introduction of a new Asian character and even a completely new magical world with their own magical animals and beings. In my opinion, this new world should be just as successful as Wakanda. What Wakanda has for technology, this world has it for magic and cool powers.

The film has great fighting scenes, cool powers, and appropriated comedic moments that will surely make the entire experience enjoyable for most people. It isn’t necessary to watch any other Marvel films prior to this one, the only reference to other films is the small presence of Wong from Doctor Strange movie in a couple of scenes. So even if a person isn’t up to date with the latest Marvel production, he/she can still enjoy this one without any issues whatsoever.

¿Cómo fueron las actuaciones del reparto, la escenografía y el trabajo de cámara?

Las actuaciones del elenco fueron geniales en general. Algo que Marvel ha hecho con bastante éxito desde sus primeras películas es la adición de algunos momentos cómicos que no devalúan ni la trama ni las escenas de acción. En algunas películas de acción se centran tanto en hacer reír que toda la historia y la autenticidad de los personajes se ven perjudicadas. Esto no suele ocurrir en las producciones de Marvel. La actriz Awkwafina tuvo algunos momentos graciosos usando su típico estilo de actuación, y un par de otros personajes también fueron graciosos por momentos.

La escenografía y el CGI fueron excelentes. El nuevo mundo que se explora estaba muy bien hecho y sus animales y seres especiales estaban perfectamente diseñados. No esperaba que esta historia fuera tan ambiciosa y fue sorprendente ver tantas cosas nuevas que se revelan. Algo similar se puede decir del trabajo de cámara, aunque siendo una superproducción de Marvel no debería sorprender que su trabajo de cámara fuera de primer nivel.

Pensamientos finales

Shang-Chi y la Leyenda de los Diez Anillos fue una excelente introducción de un nuevo personaje asiático e incluso un mundo mágico completamente nuevo con sus propios animales y seres mágicos. En mi opinión, este nuevo mundo debería tener tanto éxito como Wakanda. Lo que Wakanda tiene de tecnología, este mundo lo tiene de magia y poderes geniales.

La película tiene grandes escenas de lucha, poderes geniales y momentos cómicos apropiados que seguramente harán que toda la experiencia sea disfrutable para la mayoría. No es necesario ver ninguna otra película de Marvel antes de esta, la única referencia a otras películas es la pequeña presencia de Wong de la película de Doctor Strange en un par de escenas. Así que incluso si una persona no está al día con la última producción de Marvel, puede disfrutar de esta sin ningún tipo de problema.
