It has been a good while since the last time I saw a movie with Matt Damon playing the main role, so when I realized he was the main actor in Stillwater I immediately decided to add this film to my to-watch list. Especially, because it is a pure drama and this actor became popular mainly for his action films playing Jason Bourne.

One of the best dramatic scenes I have seen in my life was actually with Matt Damon but with a much younger version of him. I am talking about the classic movie Good Will Hunting, and the scene with the key phrase "not your fault" played between Damon and Robin Williams' characters. If you don't know which scene is this, you can find it here although I would recommend watching the entire movie instead of just that one scene.

I mentioned that because given the type of films Damon has been doing for the most part in the past few years, it might be easy to forget that this actor can also provide great performances in very dramatic stories.

What was the movie about?

The film follows Matt Damon's character who is a dad with a very troubling life. He is a hardworking man, who lives with his mother and has a daughter living in France but who got herself incarcerated there for apparently killing her girlfriend.

She claims to be innocent and her father obviously believes her, but according to her defense lawyer taking her out of jail is almost impossible. The girl has spent already around 5 years in prison and is losing her youth inside that horrible place.

There is no one available to put the time into trying to get her out of jail so the dad is going to do everything he can, he will investigate and try to find new pieces of information that could help his daughter. One of his problems is that he doesn't even speak French, but conveniently he will find a bilingual woman in his hotel, and he will be able to develop a friendship with her.

The movie makes it very clear that Damon's character wasn't really a good and competent dad. He has a lot of remorse for his mistakes from the past and his main goal is to simply help his daughter and be a respectable man once and for all.

Ha pasado un buen tiempo desde la última vez que vi una película con Matt Damon interpretando el papel principal, así que cuando me di cuenta de que él era el actor principal en Stillwater, inmediatamente decidí agregar esta película a mi lista de pendientes. Sobre todo, porque es un drama puro y este actor se hizo popular principalmente por sus películas de acción interpretando a Jason Bourne, pero desde joven demostró que era muy bueno para dramas.

Una de las mejores escenas dramáticas que he visto en mi vida fue en realidad con Matt Damon pero con una versión mucho más joven de él. Menciono esto porque debido al tipo de películas que Damon ha estado haciendo en su mayor parte en los últimos años, podría ser fácil olvidar que este actor también puede ofrecer grandes actuaciones en historias muy dramáticas.

¿De qué trataba la película?

La película sigue al personaje de Matt Damon, un padre con una vida muy complicada. Es un hombre trabajador, que vive con su madre y tiene una hija que vive en Francia, pero que fue encarcelada allí por aparentemente matar a su novia.

Ella dice ser inocente y su padre obviamente le cree, pero según su abogado defensor sacarla de la cárcel es casi imposible. La hija lleva ya alrededor de 5 años en prisión y está perdiendo su juventud dentro de ese horrible lugar.

No hay nadie disponible para dedicar tiempo a intentar sacarla de la cárcel, así que el padre hará todo lo posible, investigará y tratará de encontrar nuevos datos que puedan ayudar a su hija. Uno de sus problemas es que ni siquiera habla francés, pero convenientemente encontrará una mujer bilingüe en su hotel y podrá entablar amistad con ella.

La película deja muy claro que el personaje de Damon no era realmente un padre bueno y competente. Tiene mucho remordimiento por sus errores del pasado y su principal objetivo es simplemente ayudar a su hija y ser un hombre respetable de una vez por todas.

With the help of his new French friend, he will be able to dig deep in little bits of information that he managed to find, starting with a letter that her daughter wrote to her lawyer. He will become something similar to a private detective, working in his own free time trying to find the person who really committed the murder.

As this journey advances, he will come to the extreme situation where he ends up getting beaten up, and that part of the film wasn't the only one with a bit of violence. He knows it is possible to find the guy who really committed the murder, he only needs a little bit of luck and a lot of dedication.

We will also see how he adapts to his new life in France, and for a while, it seemed like he had found happiness once again. But taking her daughter out of jail is his top priority so tricky situations will naturally arise related to that drama.

The movie doesn't have action, suspense, or mystery, it is just a properly written drama and one that is very entertaining from beginning to end.

This person began his career in the entertainment industry as an actor in the early 80s, and around 20 years later he began to work as a director and writer. When it comes to the cast, the main member is obviously Matt Damon. An incredibly popular actor who has participated in a lot of great films throughout his career. The Jason Bourne movies are probably the most important ones of his career, but he also participated in the Ocean's trilogy, and in other great single movies such as The Adjustment Bureau, Downsizing, and The Martian. The presence of this actor was the main reason for watching Stillwater.

His daughter in the movie is played by Abigail Breslin, a young actress who recently worked in the series Scream Queens, and the movies Final Girl, Perfect Sisters, and many others.

Finally, we have Camille Cottin, who plays a French woman helping Damon's character deal with his issues while in France. The main productions where this actress has previously worked are Connasse, princesse des coeurs, Dumped and Call My Agent!.

How were the performance from the cast, the scenery and the camera work?

The cast provided a great performance with their roles. The dramatic moments were very believable and this is especially true for Matt Damon's character who made an excellent job displaying all the emotions, especially frustration and anger, as he is forced to face so many challenging situations. The same can be said about Abigail Breslin who also did a terrific job displaying all the accumulated emotions as a result of all the bad things that have happened to her.

As the movie advances, we will see a lot of different places, we will see dangerous ghettos, paradisiac access to the ocean, it wasn't really a beach since it had no sand only huge rocks but it looked like a cool place, and regular places such as a football stadium, theatre and things like that. The story takes place all over the city and I believe so much dynamism in the settings prevented the film from feeling too slow despite its length of more than 2 hours.

Final thoughts

Stillwater is a great dramatic film with an entertaining story with a lot of emotions all over the place. This is a sad movie so have that in mind when considering watching this film, but despite the sadness of the story, it was enjoyable to watch thanks to the originality of the writing and the great job of the cast while playing their characters.

The story has a little twist but it wasn't really a major surprise or anything like that, it was just a revelation that made everything even more dramatic. This is not a mystery story but rather a well-done drama.

Stillwater es una gran película dramática con una historia entretenida y con muchas emociones por todos lados. Esta es una película triste, así que tenlo en cuenta cuando consideres ver esta película, pero a pesar de la tristeza de la historia, fue agradable verla gracias a la originalidad de la escritura y al gran trabajo del elenco al interpretar a sus personajes.

La historia tiene un pequeño giro, pero en realidad no fue una gran sorpresa ni nada de eso, fue solo una revelación que hizo que todo fuera aún más dramático. Esta no es una historia de misterio sino más bien un drama bien hecho.
