HBO is a company known for its world-class dramas. There are so many excellent series produced by this company that naming them all would be impossible, but I am sure that most people have at least watched and loved a couple of HBO series.

GOT is undoubtedly their most successful production, but there have been many real-life dramas with no fantasy elements whatsoever, that were extremely good too. Succession is not a new series, it was originally released in 2018 but I haven't watched it until very recently.

Sometimes, when a series doesn't seem too convincing for me, I just skip it and if the series turns out to be successful, it will probably have more seasons in the near future and a lot of noise surrounding it with each release. That's what's happened with Succession. The third season was released several weeks ago and thanks to it, I rediscovered this series and decided to give it a watch now. I don't think I have ever watched a series about corporate drama, so it was a bit intriguing for me.

Main names associated with the series

The series has had many directors throughout the different seasons, but Mark Mylod is the one that has directed more episodes in total, and more episodes in season 1 as well. He can be considered as the main director of the series. This person usually works in series but has directed several films as well. Besides Succession, he also directed episodes of GOT, Shameless, Entourage, among many others.

The main writer and creator of the story is Jesse Armstrong, a very experienced person with over 20 years working as a writer for the entertainment industry. He was also the main writer and creator of the series Fresh Meat, and another one called The Old Guys. He even worked in a Black Mirror episode called The Entire History of You, which is one of the best episodes from the beginning of that series.

Brian Cox plays one of the main characters, he plays the patriarch of a very powerful and wealthy corporate family and he is used to playing political games and using intimidation tactics to get his way. This actor has worked in countless productions, some recent examples would be Separation, Good Omens, and Churchill.

Jeremy Strong plays the second oldest son. This character suffered some problems related to drugs before the beginning of the series, but by the time the series starts he has already overcome those issues, or so he thinks. He begins the series very involved in the family corporation, and he desires to become the new CEO once his father retires. He wants to be strong and successful as his father, but there are many doubts about this being even possible. He has also worked in the movies The Trial of the Chicago 7, The Gentlemen, and The Big Short.

Kieran Culkin plays the younger son. A guy who is used to partying and living a very relaxed life with no responsibilities whatsoever. He simply doesn't have the aptitude to live the corporate life, but thanks to nepotism he will have many opportunities of doing so. He is a constant joker and doesn't take anything seriously. Some of the other productions where he has also worked as an actor are No Sudden Move, Long Live the Royals and Movie 43.

Eso es lo que ha pasado con Succession. La tercera temporada se estrenó hace varias semanas y gracias a ella redescubrí esta serie y decidí darle un vistazo. Creo que nunca he visto una serie sobre drama corporativo, así que me resultó un poco intrigante.

Principales nombres asociados a la serie

La serie ha tenido muchos directores a lo largo de las diferentes temporadas, pero Mark Mylod es el que más episodios ha dirigido en total, y más episodios en la temporada 1. Simplemente no tiene la aptitud para vivir la vida corporativa, pero gracias al nepotismo tendrá muchas oportunidades de hacerlo. Es un bromista constante y no se toma nada en serio. Sarah Snook plays the daughter. She prefers to not live the corporate life and instead she likes working in politics as some kind of political advisor to help candidates win the elections. This actress has previously worked in several productions. The most important one, in my opinion, is a film called Predestination, which is the best time travel movie I have ever seen. She also worked in the film Steve Jobs and in a series called The Beautiful Lie.

Matthew Macfadyen plays her fiance. He works in the family corporation, unlike his fiancee, but for obvious reasons even though he has a good job he is far from being the boss. He seems to have 2 personalities, one when treating members of the family, and another completely different personality when treating people under his control or people who are far less rich than him. There seem to be no good people in this family. Apart from Succession, this actor also appeared in the series Quiz, Howards End, and Ripper Street.

Alan Ruck plays the oldest son but he isn't interested in the least in corporate life and lives a very relaxed life in his huge isolated ranch. He is almost an irrelevant character but since he is constantly appearing and key scenes I decided to mention him. As an actor, this person has worked in countless productions, more than 100, some of the most recent ones are the series The Exorcist, The Catch and The Whispers.

Finally, another important character is played by Nicholas Braun. He plays the grand-nephew of the patriarch, isn't wealthy or anything like that, and begins the season pretty much begging in a decent way for a job in the corporation. I thought this character was going to be irrelevant and was only included in the series for a couple of dark comedy scenes, but after watching season 1, it becomes clear this character can be part of important things. He has previously worked in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, How to Be Single and the series Friend Me.

What was the series about?

The series begins with the patriarch informing his family he will not be retiring in the short term. His second-oldest son (Kendall) was excited about his possible retirement because this would mean he was going to be promoted as the new CEO of the massively powerful family corporation, but it turns out this promotion would have to wait.

The story is a constant struggle involving the family members, with each of them trying to advance their own agendas and protect their interests. The main difference between the old man and Kendall and the reason why they cannot seem to get along well is that their vision regarding the future of the company isn't the same. The son is frustrated that the company might be going downhill and the father is confident about his experience and knowledge.

Throughout the season, there will be many moments where betrayals and lies will take place. The number of fights, discussions, yellings and things like that cannot be counted. This is a very dysfunctional, toxic, and problematic family, but they are forced to be together due to their common interest in the family corporation.

Por último, otro personaje importante es el que interpreta Nicholas Braun. Interpreta al sobrino nieto del patriarca, no es adinerado ni nada por el estilo, y comienza la temporada rogando de forma decente por un puesto de trabajo en la corporación. Pensaba que este personaje iba a ser irrelevante y que sólo estaba incluido en la serie para un par de escenas de comedia negra, pero después de ver la primera temporada, queda claro que este personaje puede formar parte de cosas importantes. Anteriormente ha trabajado en The Perks of Being a Wallflower, How to Be Single y la serie Friend Me.

¿De qué trata la serie?

La serie comienza con el patriarca informando a su familia que no se retirará a corto plazo. Su hijo segundo (Kendall) estaba entusiasmado con su posible jubilación porque esto significaría que iba a ser ascendido como nuevo director general de la masivamente poderosa corporación familiar, pero resulta que este ascenso tendría que esperar.

La historia es una lucha constante que involucra a los miembros de la familia, con cada uno de ellos tratando de avanzar en sus propias agendas y proteger sus intereses. La principal diferencia entre el viejo y Kendall y la razón por la que no parecen llevarse bien es que su visión sobre el futuro de la empresa no es la misma. El hijo está frustrado porque la empresa puede ir cuesta abajo y el padre confía en su experiencia y conocimientos.

A lo largo de la temporada, habrá muchos momentos en los que se producirán traiciones y mentiras. No se puede contar el número de peleas, discusiones, gritos y cosas por el estilo. Se trata de una familia muy disfuncional, tóxica y problemática, pero se ven obligados a estar juntos debido a su interés común en la corporación familiar.

None of the characters are likable so it would be impossible for most viewers to support this character or that character when the conflicts take place. However, it is surely very entertaining seeing snakes fighting and trying to dominate each other. There are also several black comedy scenes during the season, so I would say black comedy and corporate drama are the main genres of this show.

The series' pace is appropriate so the viewer can really get familiar with the characters and get to know all of their despicable traits. I don't think I have ever watched a series where all the main characters are really hateful people. With Succession it works because the fun part is, of course, watching them trying to screw each other over and over again.

I am quite excited about season 2 because I believe this story has still much more to give, and it is one of the best drama series I have seen in recent times.

How were the performance from the cast and the quality of the writing?

The performance from the cast was top-notch and is the main reason people should watch this series along with the good writing. Every single one of the main cast members I previously mentioned, including other actors and actresses I didn't mention, did a great job playing their roles. These characters aren't entirely easy to play, because they need to be despicable but in a very natural and spontaneous way. Some of the characters, like the daughter's fiance, for example, need to adopt 2 different attitudes depending on who he is with.

The tense moments, the fights, the dramas, all of this requires solid performances and the series delivers them on a constant basis.

The writing was entertaining enough, with a couple of twists and complications that make everything more intriguing and will keep many viewers glued to the screen as the episodes advance. I never thought a corporate drama could be so entertaining.

Final thoughts

Succession is a great series but take into account that if you don't like the idea of seeing a bunch of despicable characters playing dirty corporate and family politics, then I don't think you should watch this show. However, if you are looking for a high-quality drama, with top performances and excellent writing, then Succession is a series you definitely should consider watching. This is another serious drama from HBO and one that I have enjoyed very much so far. I have only watched season 1 and will be beginning to watch season 2 in the coming days.

Ninguno de los personajes resulta simpático, por lo que a la mayoría de los espectadores les resultaría imposible apoyar a este o aquel personaje cuando se producen los conflictos. Sin embargo, seguro que es muy entretenido ver a las serpientes luchando e intentando dominarse unas a otras. También hay varias escenas de comedia negra durante la temporada, así que diría que la comedia negra y el drama corporativo son los géneros principales de esta serie.

Todos y cada uno de los miembros del reparto principal que he mencionado anteriormente, incluidos otros actores y actrices que no he mencionado, hicieron un gran trabajo interpretando sus papeles. Estos personajes no son del todo fáciles de interpretar, porque tienen que ser despreciables pero de una manera muy natural y espontánea. Algunos de los personajes, como el prometido de la hija, por ejemplo, necesita adoptar 2 actitudes diferentes dependiendo de con quién esté.

Los momentos de tensión, las peleas, los dramas, todo ello requiere de actuaciones sólidas y la serie las ofrece de forma constante.

La escritura fue bastante entretenida, con un par de giros y complicaciones que hacen que todo sea más intrigante y que mantendrá a muchos espectadores pegados a la pantalla a medida que avanzan los episodios. Nunca pensé que un drama corporativo pudiera ser tan entretenido.

Pensamientos finales

Succession es una gran serie pero ten en cuenta que si no te gusta la idea de ver a un montón de personajes despreciables jugando a la sucia política corporativa y familiar, entonces no creo que debas ver esta serie. Sin embargo, si buscas un drama de alta calidad, con actuaciones de primera y una escritura excelente, entonces Succession es una serie que definitivamente debes considerar ver. Este es otro drama serio de HBO y uno que he disfrutado mucho hasta ahora. Sólo he visto la primera temporada y empezaré a ver la segunda en los próximos días.
