Right now I have 2 movies at the top of my mind which were great and took place inside casinos, one is called 21, which was a great film about a group of students led by their professor who counted cards to win a lot of money playing cards. And the other isn't actually a single film but a trilogy, the Ocean's Eleven's trilogy, which are films that I absolutely loved back in those days.
More recently, I don't think I have watched any new film using that type of place as a setting, so I was quite excited about watching The Card Counter and seeing what it was all about.

The film is about a guy who has as the name implies, has become quite skilled in counting cards while playing blackjack at casinos, and instead of losing money, he actually achieves consistent earnings.
There was something I learned the first time I saw the film 21 from the late 2000s, and it is that counting cards isn't allowed at casinos. It is possible to switch the casino's probabilistic advantage in favor of the card counters, and when the casino people figure out there is someone counting cards, they kick him out. People can even get into serious trouble if they keep coming back to count cards.
In this film, the card counter, who by the way is called William Tell, is smart enough to know when to stop and get out of the casino without getting into any problems. He wins, but he doesn't win big and this prevents him from getting too much attention from the casino people.
As the story advances, he will be approached by a young guy who recognized him due to his previous job in the army. This encounter happens while both of them attend a convention about the security industry, and it will end up changing his life, not necessarily for the best. The reasons why a military guy ends up earning a living counting cards is explained in the film, but in short words, he went through a very traumatic series of events and he needed to figure out a new way to earn a living. He had a lot of time available and manages to become very good at it.
William Tell doesn't appear to have any close family members and any responsibility whatsoever. He simply attends the tables, counts the cards, wins some money, and goes away. However, after meeting the young guy, hearing about his problems, and how both of them suffered in the past for the same reason, he decides to help him out in some way.
En este momento tengo 2 películas que recuerdo que fueron geniales y tuvieron lugar dentro de los casinos, una se llama 21, que fue una gran película sobre un grupo de estudiantes liderados por su profesor que contaban cartas para ganar mucho dinero jugando al blackjack. Y la otra no es en realidad una sola película, sino una trilogía, la trilogía de La Gran Estafa, que son películas que me encantaron en esos tiempos.
Más recientemente, no creo haber visto ninguna película nueva usando ese tipo de lugar como escenario, así que estaba bastante emocionado de ver The Card Counter y ver de qué se trataba.

The dramatic part of the story is related to a dark desire the young guy has that resulted from all the traumatic experiences he had in the past. He wants the help of Will in accomplishing some kind of shared revenge, but this doesn't sound like a good plan to him. There will be some back and forward between them, but it shouldn't be a surprise for everyone that some dramatic events take place, otherwise, this story would have felt too watered down.
On the other hand, the main's character emotional neutrality felt a bit like what Rami Malek usually does with his roles, I really thought the main actor of this series had to be related to Malek but it turns out they are not, he simply had the same lack of emotions as the typical Malek's performance.
The film sometimes feels like it is not going anywhere, or that it is advancing very slowly. It is hards to figured out the direction in which the plot is advancing, and it also has a lack of excitement that made everything less enjoyable than I expected. I can say that I wasn't satisfied with this movie even though it isn't bad, it is simply an easily forgettable film with not much to offer despite the fact it might seem intriguing at first glance.

The director and writer of the film is Paul Schrader, a very experienced guy who usually directs the stories written by him. He began his career in the entertainment industry in the 70s so he has been active for a very long time. Some of his previous productions are the film Dark, First Reformed, and Dying of the Light.
The main actor in the film is Oscar Isaac, he plays the main character and as mentioned before, in this film, the emotional neutrality of his character is very similar to what Rami Malek usually does. He has previously worked in Ex Machina, A Most Violent Year, and Annihilation among many others.
Tye Sheridan plays the second most important role in the film, a young and troubled guy who is lost and doesn't have any life objectives and will eventually receive some help from the card counter. This actor previously worked in Ready Player One, Joe, and X-Men Apocalypse.
Finally, the remaining important character is played by Tiffany Haddish. Her character manages teams, or rather "stables" as they call it in the movie, of poker players that receive financial sponsorships from rich anonymous people. Previously, this actress has worked in many productions such as Girls Trip, Night School, and Like a Boss.
La parte dramática de la historia está relacionada con un oscuro deseo que tiene el joven como resultado de todas las experiencias traumáticas que tuvo en el pasado. Quiere la ayuda de Will para lograr algún tipo de venganza compartida, pero esto no le parece un buen plan a Will. Habrá algunos avances y retrocesos entre ellos, pero no debería sorprender a todos que ocurran algunos eventos dramáticos, de lo contrario, esta historia se habría sentido demasiado aguada.

How were the performance from the cast, the scenery and the camera work?
The performance of the cast was all right. There is a good reason for the emotional neutrality of the main character, but I really thought that his detachment to pretty much everything was exaggerated towards the end of the film. It is clear his mind isn't completely normal any more thanks to his traumatic experiences in the past, but still, there were some things about him that didn't feel entirely authentic and believable.
The other 2 important characters did a better job in their roles even though those characters weren't as important as the main one. They were at least more believable in their personality and general way of being.
I liked the scenery since most of the story happens inside the casinos, and as mentioned before, those are great places to tell all sorts of entertaining crime stories.
When it comes to the camera work, it wasn't something spectacular, there were a few nice shots here and there, but nothing really amazing or innovative. It was just simply OKish and nothing more, like the movie itself I suppose.

The Card Counter didn't entirely meet my expectations, the film had a very slow pace and what's more difficult to understand is that it sometimes felt a little bit boring even though the setting was a casino. I have never seen a boring movie using a casino as a setting, and this one made me a little bit boring during some moments. I was expecting a more exciting and intense film, instead of one that contains itself until the weird ending that will make some viewer think something like "are you kidding me?".
This one isn't a great crime film but it isn't entirely bad, so I guess some people who enjoy this genre might find it worth watching. However, I believe finding a better film shouldn't be hard. The main problem with this one is that not only it takes a long time to reach a mildly disappointing destination, but also that the main character himself doesn't feel authentic and his final decision wasn't easy to understand.
So, in short words, this felt like a "meh" film, not bad but not good either so it is hard to justify giving it a watch for people who have no particular interest in it. However, if you have watched the film and enjoyed it, then feel free to share your opinions in the comments below.

La actuación del elenco estuvo bien. Hay una buena razón para la neutralidad emocional del personaje principal, pero realmente pensé que su desapego a casi todo fue exagerado hacia el final de la película. Está claro que su mente ya no es completamente normal gracias a sus experiencias traumáticas en el pasado, pero aún así, había algunas cosas en él que no se sentían del todo auténticas y creíbles.
Los otros 2 personajes importantes hicieron un mejor trabajo en sus roles a pesar de que esos personajes no eran tan importantes como el principal. Eran al menos más creíbles en su personalidad y forma general de ser.
Me gustó el escenario ya que la mayor parte de la historia ocurre dentro de los casinos y, como se mencionó anteriormente, esos son lugares excelentes para contar todo tipo de historias de crímenes entretenidas.
En lo que respecta al trabajo de la cámara, no fue algo espectacular, hubo algunas buenas tomas aquí y allá, pero nada realmente sorprendente o innovador. Simplemente estuvo bien y nada más, como la película en sí, supongo.

The Card Counter no cumplió del todo con mis expectativas, la película tuvo un ritmo muy lento y lo que es más difícil de entender es que a veces se siente un poco aburrida a pesar de que el escenario era un casino. Nunca he visto una película aburrida usando un casino como escenario, y esta me aburrió un poco durante algunos momentos. Esperaba una película más emocionante e intensa, en lugar de una que se contenga a sí misma hasta su final extraño que hará que algún espectador piense algo como "¿estás bromeando?".
Esta no es una gran película sobre crímenes, pero no es del todo mala, así que supongo que algunas personas que disfrutan de este género pueden considerar que vale la pena verla. Sin embargo, creo que encontrar una película mejor no debería ser difícil. El principal problema con esta es que no solo lleva mucho tiempo llegar a un destino ligeramente decepcionante, sino también que el personaje principal no se siente auténtico y su decisión final no fue fácil de entender.
