I have been interested in watching this film since I first found out about it a couple of months ago. The only thing I knew about this film was that the plot consisted of kids with superpowers, and there were some evil things related to them that could get scary.

Young people with superpowers going rogue is a topic that has already been explored in recent years. Movies like Chronicle and even more recently, Brightburn, make a great job showing stories with dramatic series of events where the use of powers in young characters is far from ideal.

If we think about it, any human with a superpower will probably decide to take advantage of them when given the chance. I believe this is the case because power usually corrupts, and absolute powers tend to corrupt completely, this is the case with politics and it most certainly would also be the case with superpowers, in fact, I believe the corruption and abuse with superpowers would be even worse. The series "The Boys" does a great job portraying this as well.

I decided to watch this film with the expectation to find some horror scenes and some creepiness as well, and I have to say that even though the film was different than what I was expecting, it did provide something similar to my expectations towards the end. Also, I found it curious that this film reminded me of the music video called Midnight City from M83, you can check it out here and it will quickly become obvious why I remembered it while watching the film. Now, have in mind the superpowers in the video are more flashy than those in the film.

What was the movie about?

The movie begins with a family of 4 moving to a new neighborhood due to the typical job-related reasons from the parents, they moved into a huge community with small parks, small sports fields near the buildings, and some forests that are very near as well. This means people are always walking around that place. The parents have 2 daughters, one is a very autistic teen, and the other one is a normal pre-teen girl.

Since the beginning of the film, we can see glimpses of cruelty that can exist in kids without their parents knowing everything about it because the kids make a great job hiding it. However, this film portrays the cruelty as if this was part of their normal curiosity they constantly feel due to their young age.

Soon enough, the normal girl will get to know another kid and they will become great friends, they will begin to explore this community together and also satisfy their curiosity in a bunch of creepy ways. Shortly after this friendship is established we will begin to see the paranormal powers for the first time. It was clear to me since I first saw these powers that these could end up causing some trouble down the road.

These kids have no problem spending time together away from their parents due to the type of community they are living in. They can easily go out and there find each other near their buildings. Soon enough, the movie will make it clear to the viewer that the story revolves around 4 kids including the autistic one. At first, they will all become good friends but as most people will surely expect, this won't last very long.

He estado interesado en ver esta película desde que me enteré de su existencia hace un par de meses. Lo único que sabía de esta película era que la trama consistía en niños con superpoderes, y que había algunas cosas malignas relacionadas con ellos que podían llegar a dar miedo.

Los niños con superpoderes que se vuelven rebeldes es un tema que ya se ha explorado en los últimos años. Películas como Chronicle e incluso, más recientemente, Brightburn, hacen un gran trabajo mostrando historias con historias dramáticas en las que el uso de los poderes en personajes jóvenes está lejos de ser el ideal.

Si lo pensamos bien, cualquier humano con un superpoder probablemente decidirá aprovecharse de este cuando se le dé la oportunidad. Creo que esto es así porque el poder suele corromper, y el poder absolutos tiende a corromper por completo, esto ocurre con la política y con toda seguridad también ocurriría con los superpoderes, de hecho, creo que la corrupción y el abuso con los superpoderes sería aún peor. La serie "The Boys" hace un gran trabajo retratando esto también.

Decidí ver esta película con la expectativa de encontrar algunas escenas de terror con algo de espeluznante, y tengo que decir que aunque la película fue diferente a lo que esperaba, sí me proporcionó algo similar a mis expectativas hacia el final. Además, me pareció curioso que esta película me recordara al video musical llamado Midnight City de M89 que puedes ver aquí y rápidamente se hará evidente por qué lo recordé mientras veía la película. Ahora bien, ten en cuenta que los superpoderes del vídeo son más llamativos que los de la película.

¿De qué trata la película?

La película comienza con una familia de 4 personas que se muda a un nuevo barrio por las típicas razones laborales de los padres, se mudan a una comunidad enorme con pequeños parques, pequeños campos deportivos cerca de los edificios, y algunos bosques que están muy cerca también. Esto significa que la gente siempre está paseando por ese lugar. Los padres tienen 2 hijas, una es una adolescente muy autista, y la otra es una preadolescente normal.

Desde el principio de la película, podemos ver atisbos de la crueldad que puede existir en los niños sin que sus padres lo sepan porque los niños hacen un gran trabajo ocultándolo. Sin embargo, esta película retrata la crueldad como si fuera parte de su curiosidad normal que sienten constantemente debido a su corta edad.

Muy pronto, la chica normal conocerá a otro chico y se harán grandes amigos, comenzarán a explorar esta comunidad juntos y también a satisfacer su curiosidad de un montón de formas espeluznantes. Poco después de establecerse esta amistad empezaremos a ver los poderes paranormales por primera vez. Desde que vi por primera vez estos poderes me quedó claro que estos podrían terminar causando algunos problemas más adelante.

Estos chicos no tienen problemas para pasar tiempo juntos lejos de sus padres debido al tipo de comunidad en la que viven. Pueden salir y encontrarse fácilmente cerca de sus edificios. Muy pronto, la película dejará claro al espectador que la historia gira en torno a 4 niños, incluida la autista. Al principio, todos se convertirán en buenos amigos pero, como seguramente esperará la mayoría, esto no durará mucho.

This movie shows crazy stuff in a very casual way and this could have been a way to implicitly inform the viewer that this type of story happen all over the world since the beginning of time. These kids aren't normal and it is unlikely that they are the only ones with superpowers in this fictional world, in fact, it would be inevitable for some of these kids to literally take over the world if they wished to do so when they reach adulthood.

As the story progresses, and the kids spend more and more time together, some rivalries and problems will naturally begin to emerge. And thanks to the magnitude of their powers, some of the final scenes can become very intense and suspenseful but not enough to describe them as horror material.

The film was interesting, and even though it has some scenes that could be considered a bit disturbing, I didn't really find it very shocking at all. However, it can be unpleasant to watch kids commit very mean and even cruel acts.

Main names associated with the film

The writer and director of this film was Eskil Vogt. This person is mostly known as a writer but he has also worked as a director in a handful of productions. Some of his previous jobs as a writer were in Blind, where he also worked as the director, by the way, The Worst Person in the World, and Thelma.

Rakel Lenora Fløttum is the kid actress who played the main character. This is her first time working in the entertainment industry and hopefully, she will be working again in the future because her performance was amazing. Her character appeared to be a normal girl with hidden some mean streak. However, she isn't really evil and can differentiate between good and bad.

Alva Brynsmo Ramstad plays her older autistic sister and there isn't much to say about this character except for the fact it has some incredible secrets and it will be extremely important for the plot. Just like Rakel, this was the first time Alva worked in the entertainment industry.

Sam Ashraf plays the kid who first befriends the normal girl. This kid has a troubled home and some incredible paranormal capabilities that he gladly uses. The origins of these powers are never explored and this is a big mystery that I would have loved to know more about. This film is also his first time working in the industry.

Esta película muestra cosas locas de forma muy casual y esto podría haber sido una forma de informar implícitamente al espectador de que este tipo de historias suceden en todo el mundo desde el principio de los tiempos. Estos niños no son normales y es poco probable que sean los únicos con superpoderes en este mundo ficticio, de hecho, sería inevitable que algunos de estos niños se apoderen literalmente del mundo si así lo desean cuando lleguen a la edad adulta.

La película fue interesante, y aunque tiene algunas escenas que podrían considerarse un poco perturbadoras, realmente no me pareció muy impactante en lo absoluto. Sin embargo, puede ser desagradable ver a los niños cometer actos muy mezquinos e incluso crueles.

Finally, we have Mina Yasmin Bremseth Asheim. She plays a girl living in the neighborhood and since her first scene, it becomes clear she is quite a special girl as well. It is hard for me to understand how this character and the one played by Sam had no contact prior to the arrival of the 2 sisters.

How were the performance from the cast and the scenery?

The performance from the kids actors/actresses was amazing, especially from the main actress who provided a very credible and serious performance throughout the entire film. The autistic character was also well portrayed and I am sure it must have required a lot of dedication for that actress to portray autism in such an accurate way. This is a film that is completely serious with no silly scenes whatsoever despite the fact its main characters are all kids. The inevitable drama is palpable since the beginning and I really loved it.

The scenery was very simple, it was just a regular community with some buildings and some common zones for the neighbors to have some fun. It was an ideal place for strange kids to meet with each other and explore all sorts of weird stuff.

The story only focused on the tragic experiences of these kids as they experiment and discover their capabilities while living in this community, but the film doesn't provide any explanation whatsoever about why they are like that. There is no answer, and I guess each viewer can either ignore this lack of information or create their own hypothesis about these powers. I would have loved to know more information about the origins of these powers and maybe a late scene showing some of these characters in their adulthood and how they use their powers at that age.

Final thoughts

The Innocents was a very enjoyable movie, it was different than the typical fantasy-drama movie, and the seriousness in which it explores the topic was a total success. This film has a slow pace, especially during the first half so it will require a lot of patience from the viewer but it ultimately pays off because there are some intense moments in the last 30 minutes of the movie.

It wasn't the horror movie I was expecting although there were a couple of creepy scenes and there were also some suspenseful moments towards the end. It was a satisfactory experience and a great example that good films can be produced in any country no matter how small they are. This is a Norwegian film, and if I remember correctly, this is the second Norwegian film I have seen in my life. The other one is called Trollhunter and it was also a great production.

If you are in the mood for an exotic paranormal drama where kids' curiosity includes a bit of cruelty and they use their powers to release their stress, then this film could certainly be a good option to watch.

Por último, tenemos a Mina Yasmin Bremseth Asheim. Interpreta a una chica que vive en el barrio y desde su primera escena queda claro que también es una chica bastante especial. Me cuesta entender cómo este personaje y el interpretado por Sam no tenían contacto antes de la llegada de las 2 hermanas.

¿Cómo fue la actuación del reparto y la escenografía?

La actuación de los niños actores/actrices fue increíble, especialmente de la actriz principal que ofreció una actuación muy creíble y seria durante toda la película. El personaje autista también estuvo bien representado y estoy seguro de que debió requerir mucha dedicación para que esa actriz representara el autismo de una manera tan precisa. Se trata de una película completamente seria, sin ninguna escena tonta, a pesar de que sus protagonistas son todos niños. El drama inevitable es palpable desde el principio y realmente me encantó.

El escenario fue muy sencillo, era una comunidad normal con algunos edificios y algunas zonas comunes para que los vecinos se divirtieran un poco. Era un lugar ideal para que los chicos extraños se reunieran entre ellos y exploraran todo tipo de cosas raras.

La historia sólo se centraba en las trágicas experiencias de estos chicos mientras experimentaban y descubrían sus capacidades mientras vivían en esta comunidad, pero la película no ofrece ningún tipo de explicación sobre por qué son así. No hay respuesta, y supongo que cada espectador puede ignorar esta falta de información o crear su propia hipótesis sobre estos poderes. Me hubiera gustado saber más información sobre los orígenes de estos poderes y quizás una escena tardía que mostrara a algunos de estos personajes en su edad adulta y cómo utilizan sus poderes a esa edad.

Pensamientos finales

The Innocents fue una película muy disfrutable, fue diferente a la típica película de fantasía-drama, y la seriedad con la que explora el tema fue un éxito total. Esta película tiene un ritmo lento, sobre todo durante la primera mitad por lo que requerirá mucha paciencia por parte del espectador, pero al final compensa porque hay algunos momentos intensos en los últimos 30 minutos de la película.

No fue la película de terror que esperaba aunque hubo un par de escenas espeluznantes y también hubo algunos momentos de suspenso hacia el final. Fue una experiencia satisfactoria y un gran ejemplo de que se pueden producir buenas películas en cualquier país por pequeño que sea. Se trata de una película noruega y, si no recuerdo mal, es la segunda película noruega que veo en mi vida. La otra se llama Trollhunter y también fue una gran producción.

Si te apetece un drama paranormal exótico en el que la curiosidad de los niños incluye un poco de crueldad y utilizan sus poderes para liberar su estrés, esta película puede ser sin duda una buena opción para ver.
