Crime thrillers about drug dealers have been produced en masse but I have never seen a story being explored from the different points of view of the groups involved. Some of the best series I have seen related to drug dealers are Narcos, which was awesome especially the seasons with Pablo Escobar. Ozark is another great series but it is more about laundering money for drug dealers and not selling drugs per se.

The main masterpiece of this topic is Breaking Bad of course. This series was about a teacher who gets sick with cancer and was super frustrated because he didn't have enough money for his family, so he decides to start cooking drugs using his chemistry knowledge and become the best at it.

All of these series have been worth watching, and they all show the drug topic through different lenses. Zerozerozero does the same, except it provides the viewer with 3 POVs and allows us to see all the complications and potential betrayals that could happen when distributing drugs on an international scale.

Main names associated with the series

The series has 3 different groups of characters, the Mexicans, the Italians, and the Americans. The only actor and actress I was able to recognize were 2 of the Americans. Andrea Riseborough is an actress I have seen several times on the screen. She has participated in a lot of well-known productions, some of these are Oblivion, Nocturnal Animals, she was in one episode of Black Mirror called Crocodile, and a film named Nancy which was the only time I saw her playing the main role apart from this series.

In the Zerozerozero series, she plays the daughter of an experienced drug dealer who owns a shipping company and hides the drug in what appears to be regular products. Her brother is played by the also well-known actor Dane DeHaan who has participated in several great films, such as Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, A Cure for Wellness, Lawless, and Chronicle. Every time I have seen this actor on the screen his performance has been great and most of the productions where he participates are awesome. I honestly believe he is an undervalued actor.

In this series, as I just mentioned, she plays the son of the owner of a shipping company, but unlike his sister, he doesn't participate much in the business because he is sick with Huntington's disease and also suffers from some hearing problems. He looks like a normal guy but these complications prevent him from having a normal life.

What was the series about?

The series is just about 1 big shipment of drugs produced by the Mexicans, bought by the Italians, and transported by the Americans. The Mexican drug cartels are extremely powerful entities that can pretty much do whatever they want in their country. They have people infiltrated everywhere, including the military and the police, and can be considered as the true owners of Mexico.

Se han producido en masa thrillers sobre narcotraficantes, pero nunca he visto una historia explorada desde los diferentes puntos de vista de los grupos involucrados. Algunas de las mejores series que he visto relacionadas con los narcotraficantes son Narcos, que fue increíble, especialmente las temporadas con Pablo Escobar. Ozark es otra gran serie, pero se trata más de lavar dinero para los traficantes de drogas y no de vender drogas en sí.

La principal obra maestra de este tema es Breaking Bad, por supuesto. With the Mexican group of characters, we will see how some of them have played for different sides, and how they can easily betray each other to help their personal agenda. The only thing they want is money and the easiest way for them to earn big is by selling drugs. There is one thing I didn't like and it was that every time the Mexicans were shown on screen, a lot of screen time was wasted in an irrelevant drama that didn't add anything to the story. The main Mexican character has a pregnant girlfriend, and I lost count of how many minutes were wasted with these 2 characters. This didn't happen when the series showed everything from the POVs of the Italians and Americans, I didn't feel like time was wasted during those moments.

This was also the first production I see where we can see Italian drug dealers. There is a lot of drug in Europe but generally, the series/movies focus in America and Mexico and not really in Europe. My favorite scene of the series is with an Italian character who is already very old but still has enough energy left to lead his drug business.

He has been in the drug business for decades, and his grandson is also very important in the Italian drug business. There are several Italian families that participate in this business but it becomes clear they don't really like each other. The wisdom of the old patriarch will be extremely important to fix some issues.

Finally, we have the Americans. This family seems to already have enough money from the legal shipment business but I guess greed is what makes the father decide to also participate in the drug business. The only thing they do is transport the drug from the producer to the purchaser, they are like drug brokers and have been doing this for more than a decade.

However, in one shipment things will get really complicated. There will be betrayals all over the place, and this journey will take the daughter and son to exotic countries in Africa and the Middle East. We will see how drugs get shipped to Europe, the number of people that participate in these shipments, and how corruption is extremely common and easy to exploit by wealthy drug dealers.

As mentioned before, the series shows the same events using different points of views, so we might see some important events take place, and then the series reverses and show what another character was doing while the important events took place, and then the different POVs are joined together only to be split again sometime in the future. I like this way of showing things, the plot can get very intense and this was an original way to organize all of what happened.

In a way, this was the most varied drug series I have seen in my life simply because it explores the events in the different groups involved in the drug distribution business. No other series I known of have done this, the most similar would be Narcos because it shows 2 groups, the drug dealers and the police trying to catch them.

Con el grupo de personajes mexicanos, veremos cómo algunos de ellos han jugado para diferentes bandos, y cómo fácilmente pueden traicionarse entre sí para avanzar su agenda personal. Lo único que quieren es dinero y la forma más fácil de ganar mucho dinero es vendiendo drogas. Hay una cosa que no me gustó y fue que cada vez que se mostraba a los mexicanos en la pantalla, se desperdiciaba mucho tiempo en pantalla en un drama irrelevante que no agregaba nada a la historia. El personaje principal mexicano tiene una novia embarazada, y perdí la cuenta de cuántos minutos se perdieron con estos 2 personajes. Esto no sucedió cuando la serie mostraba todo desde los puntos de vista de los italianos y estadounidenses, no sentí que se perdiera el tiempo en esos momentos.

Esta fue también la primera producción que veo donde podemos ver a traficantes de drogas italianos. Hay mucha droga en Europa, pero en general, las series/películas se enfocan en Estados Unidos y México y no realmente en Europa. Mi escena favorita de la serie es con un personaje italiano que ya es muy mayor pero que aún le queda energía suficiente para liderar su negocio de drogas.

Ha estado en el negocio de las drogas durante décadas y su nieto también es muy importante en el negocio de las drogas en Italia. Hay varias familias italianas que participan en este negocio, pero queda claro que realmente no se gustan. La sabiduría del viejo patriarca será extremadamente importante para solucionar algunos problemas.

Finalmente, tenemos a los estadounidenses. Esta familia parece tener suficiente dinero del negocio de envíos legales pero supongo que la codicia es lo que hace que el padre decida participar también en el negocio de las drogas. How were the performance from the cast, the settings and the camera work?

The cast did a great job portraying their roles for the most part. The Italians did a great job showing their intense emotions and the Mexicans did also a great job showing how cruel and ruthless they can be when trying to take control of the drug business. The Americans, as mentioned at the beginning of the article, had the best actor and actress of the series.

The settings were awesome, especially in some scenes involving the Italians. We get to see Italy's classic architecture and some rural places that were used by the drug lord to hide when necessary. The series show events in at least 5 countries, Mexico, Italy, America, Senegal, and some region controlled by Jihadists. This series really has everything. The camera work was just OK but the varied settings make up for this.

Final thoughts

Zerozerozero was a great crime series, the only one that showed events involving all the groups that take part in the drug business. It provides several POVs of the same events, and it shows how difficult it can be to distribute drugs across different continents.

It is one of the best crime series I have seen and I believe most people who like this type of production will enjoy it. There are several harsh violent scenes, but it doesn't have much gore, it is just cruel violence typical of drug dealers.

El elenco hizo un gran trabajo retratando sus papeles en su mayor parte. Los escenarios fueron impresionantes, especialmente en algunas escenas que involucran a los italianos. Vemos la arquitectura clásica de Italia y algunos lugares rurales que fueron utilizados por el capo de la droga para esconderse cuando era necesario. La serie muestra eventos en al menos 5 países, México, Italia, Estados Unidos, Senegal y alguna región controlada por yihadistas. Esta serie realmente lo tiene todo. El trabajo de cámara estuvo normalito, pero la ambientación variada lo compensa.

Reflexiones finales

Zerozerozero fue una gran serie de crímenes, la única que mostró hechos que involucran a todos los grupos que participan en el negocio de las drogas. Proporciona varios puntos de vista de los mismos eventos y muestra lo difícil que puede ser distribuir medicamentos en diferentes continentes.

Es una de las mejores series de crímenes que he visto y creo que la mayoría de las personas a las que les gusta este tipo de producción la disfrutarán. Hay varias escenas violentas duras, pero no tienen mucho gore, es solo una violencia cruel típica de los narcotraficantes.
