This film was a weird one. Since the pandemic has delayed a lot of major releases I was excited to see this new Netflix movie, it looked promising but in the end, I didn't like it. It was too surreal and bizarrely artistic for me.
The actual plot, which is never explained in the film but only slightly implied in several scenes, is actually very intriguing and potentially mind-bending. It is the dragging execution that I didn't enjoy. Maybe it was Kaufman's style that felt overdone in this particular film. Someone like Villeneuve or Christopher Nolan might have produced something more attuned with my tastes.
This is a film that will make no sense for people who don't understand the nature of the events. What you see on screen is not normal and this will become evident once the couple reaches the parent's house. In fact, even before arriving, we can notice there is something weird going on when the girl mentions there is a new kid's swing in from of a destroyed house. She wonders why is that?...
Something that could help you figure out for yourself the true nature of the events is knowing that this film doesn't belong in the scifi genre. It could belong in the fantasy genre but it depends on how you define this genre. It could be said this is a fictional fantasy despite the fact this sounds redundant. The story is like a character study mixed with a fantasy study if that's even a thing.
The parts I disliked the most were the final 20 minutes approx. The film just goes full nonsense and it doesn't even look interesting like some mind-bending movies from the scifi genre. This was yawning and cringing nonsense that really screwed the movie for me. I don't like the musical genre so seeing a couple of people dancing, then doing a sort of fight while dancing, and later on having one of the main characters singing in a very bizarre situation really turned me off. The actual plot was awesome, but the artistic execution was crap for me. Especially in those final scenes.
If you like Kaufman then you will probably enjoy this puzzling movie if you are looking for something strange, bizarre, and something that will leave you wondering, then you should also check this movie out. I think the people that can enjoy this film the most are those that read the book because apparently, in the book it is eventually explained the true nature of everything that happened. In the film, this isn't explained.
The best
- The weird plot is original and unique. It could have been much better with a less bizarre approach.
The worst
- A lot of weird, symbolic, and boring scenes. Especially when characters are dancing or singing.
- Understanding everything that ha[[ens won't be that easy.
