I Am Not Okay with This - "I’m not okay. I’m just pretending I am."

Some days ago Netflix released this interesting looking show about a girl that suddenly realizes she has superpowers. No explanation is given in the beginning about why she is like this and the viewers are as lost as her when it comes to the origins of this mysterious condition.

At first, I decided to avoid it because I wasn't convinced I was going to enjoy it, but it got several good reviews so I decided to give it a chance to see what was this all about.

The setting was very homely, it kind of reminded me of the videogame Life is Strange 1. A small town, a normal-ish girl (not a loner but not very popular), and some weird powers that suddenly appears. The typical diner-scene™ is also included. The story and powers are totally different from those in Life is Strange, but the combination of those 3 elements made me remember that game.

There are no touching moments whatsoever, the drama isn't that serious or intense, just teens stuff. The interesting parts were always when her powers were included, but this almost never happens and there are no major events conditioned by her powers except in the fun-filled ending. There is also no straightforward villain, although I have the feeling some kind of evil will be included in season 2. The last scene in season 1 makes this very clear and it was something the show hinted at in previous episodes.

In case they produce season 2 if they focus on her powers and their mysterious origin then I might give this show another chance, but if it gets lost on a never-ending stream of teen drama I will simply avoid this show like I did with Stranger Things. The mysterious figure in the ending looks intriguing enough to justify a second season so I hope they produce it and give a more serious tone to the show. Something that, for example, happened in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban where the movie took a much darker turn and included creatures that looked like the embodiment of evilness such as the dementors. It is possible to save this show and turn it into something really cool and unique, but it will depend on what they do with season 2.

This Netflix show wasn't very cool for me. The same happened with Stranger Things, the dumbing down of the dialogue to accommodate the young actors and especially the young fans screw the enjoyment. I actually enjoyed this show more than the last season of Stranger Things but I was expecting more of a mystery and less of a teen drama. This was a mild disappointing so I am hoping Netflix does a good job with Castlevania season 3 which is released today and Ozark season 3 which will be released at the end of the month. I Am Not Okay with This is a show that can surely be enjoyed by teens and kids.

The best

  • Based on the ending, next season should be much more interesting. Although I am not sure I will watch it.
  • Sophia Lillis makes a good job in her first role as the lead actress.

The worst

  • My suspicions of this show having too much teen drama were correct.
  • The mystery moments regarding her powers were too scarce. Much of the show was regular teens doing their stuff.
