I don't recall having seen a movie from Indonesia before, so this is the first one for me and it was a nice surprise. Impetigore is a film from 2019 about a mystery in a remote village with very dark and sinister origins. The movie begins with a woman working on a toll collecting the payments from the drivers.

Suddenly, she sees a creepy car and it is not the first time that car has circulated on that road because she was familiar with its creepiness. The driver stares at her and it is clear he has a hostile attitude towards her. This first scene has a very intense climax and it will set the tone for what will happen later in the village.

Influenced by the traumatic experience with the crazy driver, the woman along with her best friend will decide to visit the village where she was born to see if she can learn more about her family history and also to see if there is some inheritance left for her that could help solve some of her economic issues. This village is in a very remote place, it only has dirt roads and the people don't have electricity. It is a very rural place with a population that loves superstitions.

When the 2 girls arrive the people are puzzled when seeing these outsiders, some of them keep staring at them but there are no signs of any hostile intention towards the visitors. One of the first things that creep them out was seeing 2 small funerals taking place on consecutive days. This was strange especially because the village isn't that big and it is unlikely for 2 people to die one day after the other. It doesn't take long for them to feel strange in this place but they refused to leave without completing their errands.

This village is suffering from a horrible curse and this will be implied since the beginning of the film. There are some scenes with ghosts but the scariest thing was the people living there and how far they were able to go to search for a cure for this curse. They are just innocent people being forced to deal with evilness and with no way to fight back. So their frustration is understandable.

The film has a proper pace and length, it was intense enough at times and the entire experience was very enjoyable. If you enjoy the horror genre you will most likely enjoy this film as well. There were some scenes when the acting was a bit underwhelming, and the same can be said about a decision from a particular character, but all in all, this was a great horror film.

The best

  • Excellent story with a good twist and cool scary scenes.
  • It has a great pace, it didn't feel bored.

The worst

  • Some violent interactions were too generic.
  • A key event happens because a character that was very careful and scared suddenly takes a very big risk on her own which didn't make much sense.

Thank you for watching Indonesian films, the original title in Indonesian is "Wanita Tanah Jahanam" this is one of the best movies of the director "Joko Anwar" besides "Pengabdi Setan".
