I finally watched Knives Out and it is easily one of my top 10 movies of 2019! This is a murder mystery where a wealthy old man is suddenly found dead in his bedroom in what appears to be a suicide. He has a lot of children and grandchildren and there are a lot of tensions regarding how money is going to be handled and how the inheritances are going to be distributed.
The house where the majority of the story takes place is a beautiful country home, very big and surrounded by woods. There are a few members of the family who have always lived a very entitled life and don't quite appreciate the privileges they have thanks to their father.
The film gives us hints several times that there might be more than one person who could be capable of doing something horrible in order to protect his/her lifestyle from any sudden loss, and figuring out what actually happens is what this movie is all about.
In order to discover the series of events that caused the death of the old man, there are 3 detectives doing an investigation and interviewing every person that was in the house on that day. It is through these interviews we will see, at the beginning of the movie, glimpses of what took place.
This type of story is perfect for twists, and there are certainly a few surprises but ultimately the big surprise at the end was a little bit predictable. However, this doesn't reduce the enjoyment because what makes this movie shine is the charismatic characters, the amazing acting, the high-quality shots, and the well-written dialogue.
What Knives Out offers is mystery cinema at its best with a story that flows nicely and peculiar characters that add nice touches here and there. Being an easy top 10 movie from last year it is fair to consider it a must-watch.
The best
- Ana de Armas is lovely and with a great performance as always. Well, the performances were awesome in every character! Ana de Armas stands apart though. Daniel Craig also deserves to be named as an amazing main detective.
- The cinematography was top notch! The entire film looks beautiful with amazing shots!
- The mystery sucks you in and it pays off in a satisfactory manner. Most people will have fun watching this flick.
The worst
- Despite having a story full of secrets, lies, and manipulations, there were a few characters that could have contributed more to the richness of this story. It is not their fault but the writer's fault.
