I don't even remember when was the last time I saw this type of action-comedy film so when I notice this monster movie was being released I decided to give it a watch and see if it was cool. The first thing you will notice is that this isn't a serious movie, the way the main character speaks, his dialogues, and his personality make it very clear since the beginning that this is just a silly flick and I think it was made mainly for kids.
The story takes place in a world where insects and certain animals have mutated and are now super huge. So huge they can easily kill and eat humans. This mutation happened after an asteroid was destroyed and its chemicals fall on the Earth. Curiously, mammals were not affected by these mutations.
This apocalyptic event happened 7 years ago and now most humans live underground and have a lot of problems finding enough resources to survive. The main character, played by Dylan O'Brien, is a young guy in his 20s how isn't brave and strong enough to fight against the monsters. So his job is to be the cook and the technical guy working with the radio.
He feels very useless most of the time and he misses the girlfriend he had before the apocalypse began. So, once he finds the colony where she lives, he decides to risk his life on the surface and go reunite with her.
This incredibly risky journey will change his life forever. He will make new friends and gain a lot of experience and knowledge. He will grow as a person and surprisingly he will even be able to help others.
The thing I disliked the most was the attitude of the main character when he is in very dangerous situations. For example, if he knows how dangerous the surface is, he should always be aware of where he is stepping his foot to avoid any fatal mistake but he doesn't do this and at one part he simply misses a giant hole in the ground and falls there. The hole was so huge it was simply impossible to miss.
The monsters look good but I insist the film is mainly for kids who will certainly have a lot of fun watching so many crazy monsters but this doesn't mean it is boring for adults. This is a good film to watch if you just want some silly action.
