Lupin (7.5/10) - "Arséne Lupin isn’t just a book. He’s my heritage. My method. My path. I am Lupin"

Do you remember the charismatic guy from the popular French movie The Intouchables? The one who was hired to take care of a wealthy quadriplegic old man? Well, that guy is back and he is now a talented robber but with principles!

The name of his character isn't really Lupin but he does live his life trying to become a sort of real-life version of Lupin. Lupin is a character from books written at the beginning of the 20th century, he was an expert thief and was always able to deceive others thanks to his social skills and his ability to disguise himself according to the situation.

In this series, the main character discovers Lupin's books when he was a child, and became fascinated with his stories. So much so, that his entire adult persona is like a mirror image of the Lupin character but this is also the result of a personal trauma that is explored in the series. In fact, that trauma is the main trigger for the events of the entire series.

Lupin, or as he is actually named in this series, Assane Diop, is the type of genius thief that could easily join the ranks of the Ocean's gang. He could even be a member of the magician thieves from the film Now You See Me. What's even crazy is that Diop plays alone and he constantly outsmarts everyone with such ease that it might even seem like too much superiority on his part.

Diop isn't looking to get rich, he is just looking to bring down a corrupt and extremely powerful man, and is using the skills he has to accomplish this ambitious goal. His skills are mindblowing, and it reminded me of the character from the Ocean's movies called François Toulour who is also French, also plays alone, and competes with the Ocean's gang for the robberies. In fact, I wonder why that actor wasn't chosen for the role of Diop/Lupin given the fact he has experience acting as an elegant and talented thief.

This was a great series to watch and if you enjoyed the movies I mentioned before you will probably also enjoy this one. The series is very short only lasting 5 episodes with around 45 minutes each, and it ends with an important attack that will completely change Lupin's plans for the immediate future. I am expecting season 2 although I don't understand why they decided to release so little content. The standard is a minimum of 8 episodes per season with the exception of miniseries which only consist of 1 single season. Anyways, the show is good and I recommend it for those that enjoy watching creative thieves having their way.

The best

  • Very entertaining series combining comedy with crime.
  • There are enough reasons for a season 2 to be produced.

The worst

  • Some of the comedy scenes could have been better.
  • The creativity of the main character was good but sometimes it was exaggerated.

I had not seen a series that caught my attention in a long time under this genre of mystery, robbery and drama.

Undoubtedly "LUPIN" is a series that is worth watching and that will leave you wanting to know more about this mythical character, who makes you think about how he will get out of each problem that arises.

A French series that shows that not only North American or Latin series are addictive and of high quality.

Netflix is expanding in different parts of the world, giving us the opportunity to enjoy different ways of creating audio visual art.

    Very good.
