Maigret Sets a Trap is a detective novel from the 50s, it was adapted to the screen first in 1958 and then in 1992 as an episode for the Maigret series of that year, but the most popular adaption is from a British series from 2016 which is also called Maigret, the detective's name.
One of the episodes of this series is about the story "Maigret Sets a Trap". I will probably watch the other episodes as well, but as far as I know, they are independent of each other and can serve as individual movies about the same detective solving different crimes.
Rowan Atkinson is an actor best known for 2 very funny characters, Mr. Bean and Johnny English. After watching Maigret Sets a Trap I can confirm he is also capable of playing a serious role in a crime drama. He plays a detective that is trying to solve a series of murders in his town, and since they are unable to catch the criminal he decides to adopt a risky, and some might even think crazy, strategy.
The story takes place in Paris although this is a British film with a British cast and everyone speaks English. The crime is that several women have been murdered in recent weeks and months, and they always have several features in common such as their hair color and similar height.
The killer is very sophisticated and methodical in his crimes so the detective would have to find a way to outplay the criminal if he really wants to catch him. The cast all made a good job portraying their characters, and the entire film was a very pleasant watch. At some point in the story, it keeps the viewer guessing which character is the real murderer.
If you enjoy films about detectives I think this one would be a good choice. The entire Maigret series from 2016 is probably as good as this episode but I haven't the remaining 3 episodes as of yet so recommending the series is something I cannot do right now but will probably do in a matter of days. Also, even though this episode is about a murder there aren't any gore or brutal scenes whatsoever, everything is very elegant with no seriously rough scene.
The best
- Very entertaining plot about a detective hunting down a serial killer.
The worst
- Some parts of the plot would be almost impossible to happen in real life. Although who knows, I guess real-life crime stories that are even crazier have actually happened.
