Nancy - An unstable woman searches for the sense of belonging she never had

There have been cases where kidnapped people return to their original families decades after the traumatic event. This usually happens when the kidnapped person is a kid, and after reaching adulthood in one way or another the person realizes this life has been a total lie.

This is what we think we are seeing in the movie Nancy. The main character is a woman in her mid-thirties or perhaps close to 40yo. Despite being this young, she has some white hairs and her face is emaciated. Clearly, she has had a rough life and when we see her mother, we can see this is not a very positive and functional relationship. Her old mother is very toxic and is probably the reason why this woman is so messed up.

She certainly has severe psychological issues, we can confirm this in the first 20 minutes when we see her interacting in real life with a friend from the internet. However, these issues don't prevent her from appearing as a regular person. She is normal for the most part but something is clearly broken inside her.

The main topic of the movie is that this woman ends up believing she was kidnapped as a child. This part of the story begins at around 30 minutes into the movie but taking into consideration her mental instability this could be hard to believe for the viewer. The main argument in her favor is that the digitally created picture of a child that was kidnapped 30 years ago is very similar to her current looks. We can see in the poster how similar those 2 faces are.

The movie is also about people in deep need of finding a special connection they are currently lacking when suddenly they sort of find it but maybe not how they were expecting it. There is also the need to fill up emotional holes both in Nancy and the older couple who lost their child 30 years ago. In the movie, they do a DNA test to confirm if Nancy is the child but the answer is never revealed to the viewer, however, it is implied given certain reactions from the characters.

I would recommend this movie to those than enjoy the drama genre. It is not a thriller, just a story about a troubled woman full of drama. There are no touching moments either in my opinion, but I think some people might be captivated by the emotional responses of her supposed biological mother.

The best

  • Great performances. The lead actress did an awesome job portraying this broken woman.
  • As a drama it is a good enough flick.

The worst

  • It was slower than what I was expecting. The kidnapping part of the story begins after the first third or so.
  • The main character remains a mystery after the ending. No proper answers are provided that help explain her background and why she is like that.
