I am not a big fan of movies with cowboys or with stories that take place in the wild west, but I am a fan of Tom Hanks. So I decided to give this film a chance and see for myself if it was worth watching. I have to say this was the most boring film I have ever watched with Tom Hanks.

His character works as a traveling news teller, he goes to towns, collects 10 cents per attendant and he simply begins to read recent news to everyone present. This is a weird job that I am sure most people wouldn't know existed, I for sure didn't know that people in the past paid for having the news read to them.

On one of his trips, he encounters this young girl, she is all alone, and clearly very vulnerable with so many predators, both animal and humans, constantly looking for preys. The girl doesn't even speak English but rather a strange dialect probably from the indigenous population. However, her looks are very European.

He decides to take the girl with him and return her to a safe place where she can continue living her life in peace. However, this will be much more challenging than what he was thinking when making that decision. They will have to face violent people, difficult weather circumstances, and other complications as they go through this unique journey.

What I disliked the most about this movie was its very slow pace and lack of any meaningful twist or surprise. The dangers they encountered were expected and even the ending was expected, at least for me. So everything I thought was going to happen in the movie, ended up happening and the patience required to watch this film wasn't rewarded.

I would only recommend this film to people who love the wild west, cowboys, and don't mind watching a slow-paced story. It is not enough touching nor intense to recommend it to a broader audience.

The best

  • Tom Hanks and Helena Zengel (the girl) are good in their roles.

The worst

  • Very slow-paced and a bit boring.
  • The events in the story are easy to guess before they happen.

haha, I saw this pop up on my home screen today and I was thinking to myself "Tom Hanks as a Cowboy? No way that is going to work." I am surprised to hear that it is boring though, since Hanks is a big enough actor that he probably gets to pick and choose whatever role he wants.

Slow-paced rarely works for me, so I'll probably give this one a miss.
