The main reason I decided to watch this film was thanks to its director, Sofia Coppola. I am no big fan of the romance genre because it tends to bore the hell out of me, but Lost in Translation was an awesome movie and Virgin Suicides was a cool drama as well. These are the only 2 films I have watched from this director, and they are both from the early 2000s and late 90s. Coppola has directed more movies but nothing that seemed too interesting so I haven't watched her newer works with the exception of the recently released On the Rocks.

In this film, the story is about a woman in her late 30s and her womanizer wealthy father who is now quite old. The woman is sensing something is wrong in her marriage and that's causing her to feel very insecure and unhappy. This is an established marriage with 2 young kids where the husband spends a lot of time working while the wife works from home because she is a writer.

The reason why the woman begins to spend a lot of time with her father is because of what she is sensing in her marriage. She asks him for advice and they begin to hang out and share a lot of time together. The story has a bit of drama but it is also very silly and has a happy ending. There are also a lot of funny scenes facilitated by Murray's eccentric character.

Murray's character is the main attraction in this film, he appears to know everyone in the city, there is even a hilarious scene with a cop that's probably the funniest in the movie and the one that proves his popularity the most, and he also has his own ideas about life in general that he shares with his daughter.

This film didn't have any similarity with Coppola's previous masterpiece (Lost in Translation) despite the fact it has Bill Murray as one of its main cast. Although this was expected because the magic in Lost in Translation is the sense of feeling lost in a foreign place and finding comfort in someone who is feeling the same as you.

On the Rocks could have been perfectly directed by Woody Allen, if I didn't know Coppola was its director my first thought would have been "this is a Woody Allen's film". Its drama parts aren't necessarily sad, this is not a movie to make people cry but rather to elaborate funny situations in dramatic moments that could happen to anyone. So if you like Allen's style you will probably have a good time watching this flick.
