I just finished watching Psycho-Pass season 2 and it was a fine sequel to the first season. In case you don't know what this series is about, it is set in a futuristic semi cyberpunk Japan where they have created a system called Sibyl that can recognize how likely it is a person to commit a crime. This calculation is called crime coefficient and above a certain threshold, a person is deemed to be incredibly dangerous.
What this system says goes, almost no one dares to dispute what the system indicates, and it is so much embedded in the fabric of the society that even the police have special futuristic weapons that are directly connected to the Sibyl system.
They point the weapon at the potential criminal, and according to his/her crime coefficient the weapon either blocks the shot or activates it and if it activates the crime coefficient determines what type of shot will be used. It can a lethal one if the person is considered very dangerous by the system, or if the crime coefficient isn't that high then a non-lethal shot is used.
In season 1, the villain was a person who wanted to destroy the system, in the end, there were huge surprises regarding the nature of the system itself, and how its physical "body" actually looks like. Sibyl is, of course, a massive processing unit that most people would think of as a supercomputer, except it is a different type of computer and one that could easily be shocking for anyone that sees its true face.
In season 2, the new villain had similar goals but unlike the previous one, this was really a very special person, perhaps even unique in this entire futuristic world. Since there is a lot of scifi involved in the series, a person like the new villain couldn't exist in our current world. His existence would require a level of scientific and technological advancement that currently doesn't exist. Given the fact he is a very special being, he is unable to be properly analyzed by the Sibyl System. This allows him to pretty much do whatever he likes without the risk of punishment by the system.
The main character in this season is the same female detective as in the previous one, she would be the one who figures out what is happening and ultimately find a correct and legal solution. Besides the villain, other evil characters will also be revealed and her sanity and mental stability will face risks like never before. Being a detective who is constantly fighting against bad people, she as every single detective runs the risk of getting too disturbed and increasing her crime coefficient permanently. This is something she will have to manage in order to continue with her honorable job.
If you enjoy Japanese scifi anime this one is certainly worth the watch. The world has been very explored so far given the fact there are 3 seasons and 3 movies released. I am watching them all in order so my next Psycho-Pass viewing will be the first movie, I will watch season 3 later on.
The best
- It was just as entertaining as the first season.
- The new main villain was an interesting concept of a person.
The worst
- The main character hasn't been corrupted not even a little bit. This should change because she has endured very traumatic experiences.
