Several weeks ago I watched Psycho 1 & 2 and they both were really good. It was yesterday when I had the time available to watch the third part of this trilogy. This time, the movie wasn't as enjoyable as the previous 2, but it kept itself interesting mainly thanks to the character of Norman Bates.
The events of this movie happen around a month after Psycho II. As we could see in that movie's ending, Norman's mind is back to a toxic state with dual personalities, just as in the first film. Being older he seems to be more in control or at least more aware of this sick aspect of his psyche. This doesn't prevent him from committing horrible acts though.
There are other aspects that make this film really similar to the first one, for example, there is a new character that resembles Marion Crane, who is the famous victim from the first film, I am sure you remember the iconic bathroom murder where she is killed. This resemblance is not by accident of course, it will be an important factor for what happens next.
There were several things that I didn't like, for instance, acting wasn't as good as Psycho II. I don't compare it to the first one because that movie is from a different era. The second part though is just 3 years older than the third one. I am guessing the budged was smaller and they needed to hire cheaper actors. The truth is, I don't recall any great moment or scene in Psycho III. In fact, the first 2 scenes set the tone regarding the quality of the performance we will see from the new actors.
It sadly doesn't provide any new twists or any surprises of any kind. Psycho became famous for its mindblowing twist about Norman's mother. This movie doesn't have anything new to keep the viewer entertained. The only semi-interesting thing about this movie was knowing what will happen to Norman Bates in the end.
I would only recommend this movie for those that are interested in knowing what happened in the end to Norman Bates. The movie doesn't provide new types of scares, and some parts are recycled from the previous 2. What it does provide is a closure to the story of this popular psychopath.
The best
- It provides a proper ending to Norman Bates' story.
- It also provides a bit more info about Norman's background.
The worst
- The acting wasn't on par with the previous 2 movies. It was a downgrade.
- No twists or anything, it was boring at times.
- Nothing new in terms of horror/suspense.
