Relic - "Since your grandfather passed, this house seems unfamiliar."

I am a fan of horror, so anytime I watch a slightly interesting movie/series from the horror genre I would probably end up watching unless its ratings are really horrible. Relic belongs mostly in the suspense genre but there are several scenes that earn it a spot in the horror genre as well.

The story is about 3 women, the grandmother, the mother, and the daughter. The 2 youngest ones are visiting the grandmother but she is nowhere to be found. We will soon learn that the oldest woman has severe mental issues that might explain her weird behavior. In the movie, she is always showing symptoms typical of dementia and Alzheimer.

However, this is a horror movie not a drama, so the real explanation behind the weird things that begin to take place in this house, and are especially affecting the grandmother, is from the supernatural realm not from psychology. A few scenes reminded me of the movie The Visit (2015) due to the strange behavior from the old woman, but the plot of these 2 films are completely different.

The good horror stuff happens mostly at the end when we will have a scene that can be considered as pure horror, although I didn't find it very scary I can admit it was horror. The ending didn't feel generic at all which is very good.

I also found the movie lacked a few more intense scenes, there was always a nice suspense surrounding the grandmother but the supernatural element is only showed just a little bit until we reach the exciting ending.

If you are looking for a cool suspense/horror film, then Relic would be a good flick to watch. It has a good plot, good acting from the cast, I enjoyed the ending and overall it was a little good horror film.

The best

  • Good story involving several generations of the same family.

The worst

  • There are little hardcore horror scenes, most is suspense.

I never had the emotional push to see it but your review seems to point in the opposite direction. Thanks for sharing.

Not really my cup of tea but might try it out.

On an unrelated note I just finished the first season of penny dreadful. You were right, it's way better than the latest version.

I still think we should give the la version to develop the story some more, there are some intriguing plot points there.

    Anyways, back to season 2.
