I really enjoy series where there is some type of time manipulation, my favorite Netflix series of all time is Dark, and it was the best time-traveling story I have ever seen. The only thing I knew about th Russian Doll series is that the main character was somehow trapped in a time loop, or rather, some type of limbo where she always repeated the same day and everytime she died she went back to that day once again.
The idea surely seemed very intriguing to me, I have seen stories with time loops in the past and they are usually mind-bending. Triangle is a very notorious example and I am sure they are many more.
When I see this type of story I always try to figure out how is the time manipulation happening, what are the reasons for it, and if there are any solutions to the character enduring this time torment. Paranormal or spiritual explanations are probably the easiest ones to develop, but I also think scifi-based explanations could be an option as well.
If you have read about the simulation theory, then you will surely be aware that one of its implications is that a simulation’s creator, could very well manipulate the time’s behavior of the simulation, in order to observe and study how the beings living inside the simulations react.
When I was watching this series I was taking all of these different options into consideration trying to figure out which was the explanation they used for this story.
The series doesn’t get philosophical even though its topic could allow for some philosophical discussions. The series focuses more on the meaningless life of the main character, who is a woman in her 30s with not much going on, and it gave me the impression she had some type of nihilistic outlook on life, even before becoming trapped in a time loop.
Realmente disfruto las series donde hay algún tipo de manipulación del tiempo, mi serie favorita de Netflix de todos los tiempos es Dark, y fue la mejor historia de viajes en el tiempo que he visto. Lo único que sabía de la serie Russian Doll es que el personaje principal estaba de alguna manera atrapado en un bucle de tiempo, o mejor dicho, una especie de limbo donde siempre se repite el mismo día y cada vez que moría volvía a ese día una vez más.
La idea me pareció muy intrigante, he visto historias con bucles temporales en el pasado y suelen ser interesantes. Triangle es un ejemplo muy notorio y hay muchos más.
Cuando veo este tipo de historia, siempre trato de averiguar cómo está ocurriendo la manipulación del tiempo, cuáles son las razones y si hay alguna solución para que el personaje sufra este tormento temporal. Las explicaciones paranormales o espirituales son probablemente las más fáciles de desarrollar, pero también creo que las explicaciones basadas en ciencia ficción también podrían ser una opción.
Si has leído acerca de la teoría de la simulación, seguramente sabrás que una de sus implicaciones es que el creador de una simulación podría muy bien manipular el comportamiento temporal de la simulación, para observar y estudiar cómo los seres que viven dentro de las simulaciones reaccionan.
Cuando estaba viendo esta serie, estaba considerando todas estas diferentes opciones tratando de averiguar cuál era la explicación que usaron para esta historia.
La serie no se vuelve filosófica a pesar de que su tema podría permitir algunas discusiones filosóficas. La serie se enfoca más en la vida sin sentido del personaje principal, que es una mujer de unos 30 años sin mucho que hacer, y me dio la impresión de que tenía algún tipo de visión nihilista de la vida, incluso antes de quedar atrapada en un bucle temporal.
She spends all day smoking and talking nonsense with the people around her, and honestly, those conversations were super plain and boring. They weren't interesting, didn't add anything of value didn't cause any intrigue, they weren't even funny. They were really crappy conversations.
Surprisingly, she doesn't get stressed when realizing she is reliving the same day as before even though she should be dead. This lack of traumatic reaction is probably due to her nihilistic outlook on life. Anything crazy can happen but she only cares about her cat, nothing more. She is a cat lady even though she is in her 30s.
However, after a while she does begin to look for answers and explanations about the crazy thing she is living, being trapped in a time loop and should be a maddening experience after all.
She questions her mental health, she wonders if her drug use is the cause for this. Suddenly, her life is all about looking for ways to escape this time loop. However, there is noemotional breakdown or psychotic break or anything similar. I believe a normal person would have had a more intense reaction when trapped in a time loop
Along with the time loop, she also appears to be hunted by death itself. If you watched the Final Destination movies you surely remember how the person who was next in the line of death, had almost no chance of avoiding it. For this woman, it is like she is always the first on the line of death, only to then reappear on the night of her party, and everything begins to repeat again.
Her death is never the same but they are always unavoidable and some of them can begin to get a bit funny but I was honestly expecting the series to be funnier than it was. It didn't make me laugh, or maybe just once but I wouldn't describe it as a comedy series.
Since she knows she will die and reappear the night of her birthday, she begins to make decisions and do stuff she wouldn't normally do, and one night, just by chance she meets a man that can change everything for her.
Se pasa todo el día fumando y hablando tonterías con la gente que la rodea y, sinceramente, esas conversaciones eran súper sencillas y aburridas. No eran interesantes, no añadían nada de valor, no causaban intriga, ni siquiera eran divertidas. Eran conversaciones realmente horribles.
Sorprendentemente, no se estresa al darse cuenta de que está reviviendo el mismo día que antes, aunque debería estar muerta. Esta falta de reacción traumática probablemente se deba a su visión nihilista de la vida. Cualquier locura puede pasar pero a ella solo le importa su gato, nada más. Ella es una señora de los gatos a pesar de que tiene unos 30 años o por ahí.
Sin embargo, después de un tiempo, ella comienza a buscar respuestas y explicaciones sobre la locura que está viviendo, estar atrapada en un bucle de tiempo debería ser una experiencia enloquecedora después de todo.
Cuestiona su salud mental, se pregunta si su consumo de drogas es la causa de esto. De repente, su vida consiste en buscar formas de escapar de este bucle temporal. Sin embargo, no hay crisis emocional ni brote psicótico ni nada parecido. Creo que una persona normal habría tenido una reacción más intensa al quedar atrapada en un bucle de tiempo
Junto con el bucle de tiempo, también parece ser perseguida por la muerte misma. Si viste las películas de Destino final seguramente recuerdas cómo la persona que estaba de primero en la lista para morirse, casi no tenía posibilidades de evitarlo. Para esta mujer, es como si siempre fuera la primera en la lista de la muerte, para luego reaparecer en la noche de su fiesta, y todo comienza a repetirse nuevamente.
Su muerte nunca es la misma, pero siempre son inevitables y algunas de ellas pueden comenzar a volverse un poco divertidas, pero honestamente esperaba que la serie fuera más divertida de lo que fue. No me hizo reír, o tal vez solo una vez, pero no la describiría como una serie de comedia.
Como sabe que morirá y reaparecerá la noche de su cumpleaños, comienza a tomar decisiones y a hacer cosas que normalmente no haría, y una noche, por casualidad, conoce a un hombre que puede cambiarlo todo para ella.
This change, which happened in episode 3, really improved the series and made it much more enjoyable. I know the series attempts to use this time loop to send some type of message about morality to the viewer, this becomes clear towards the end but I still had doubts regarding all of this crazy time loop and its nature.
As mentioned before, the second season is already released so I think I will be watching it. I am not sure how the story can continue because it kind foreached an acceptable ending this season, but I guess there is more thing that can be done with the 2 main characters, and hopefully, more answers abut the nature of this time loop could also be revealed with more episodes.

The first season was somewhat acceptable to watch, with short episodes lasting close to 30 minutes which allowed the story to be properly condensed and not overextended. It was certainly an original approach to this time-related niche and if you have enjoyed similar stories in the past, this one should be added to your to-watch list, however, have in mind the later episodes are better than the first ones and I was really expecting this series to be much better.
It isn’t a groundbreaking production, but it doesn’t need to be that in order to be a worth-watching series. I would have preferred it to be funnier but maybe my expectations were too high.
Este cambio, que ocurrió en el episodio 3, realmente mejoró la serie y la hizo mucho más disfrutable. Sé que la serie intenta usar este bucle temporal para enviar algún tipo de mensaje sobre la moralidad al espectador, esto queda claro hacia el final, pero todavía tenía dudas con respecto a todas esta locura del bucle temporal y su naturaleza.
Como mencioné antes, la segunda temporada ya se lanzó, así que creo que la veré. No estoy seguro de cómo puede continuar la historia porque de alguna manera logró un final aceptable esta temporada, pero supongo que se pueden hacer más cosas con los 2 personajes principales y, con suerte, también se podrían obtener más respuestas sobre la naturaleza de este bucle temporal.

La primera temporada fue aceptable de ver, con episodios cortos que duraron cerca de 30 minutos, lo que permitió que la historia se condensara adecuadamente y no se extendiera demasiado. Sin duda, fue un enfoque original para este nicho relacionado con el tiempo y si has disfrutado de historias similares en el pasado, esta debe agregarse a tu lista de pendientes, sin embargo, ten en cuenta que los últimos episodios son mejores que los primeros y realmente esperaba que esta serie fuera mucho mejor.
No es una producción que sorprenda mucho, pero no necesita serlo para ser una serie que valga la pena ver. Hubiera preferido que fuera más divertido pero quizás mis expectativas eran demasiado altas.
