I haven’t seen many movies from Russia, probably less than 5, so I am not familiar with their local talents regarding directors and actors. The reason I decided to check this film out was simply that it had a plot that could be entertaining. Sputnik is a scifi-horror movie about the unknown things we can find in space.

There are 2 cosmonauts that encounter a very weird object/being but the viewer can’t really see what it is in the scenes that take place inside the ship. It is when they return to Earth that one of them is being examined that we can really see what this thing is. There is only one movie that I have seen before that is slightly similar, its name is "Life" and it's from 2017. The big difference between these 2 stories is the much more hostile nature of the extraterrestrial in the American film. Which makes it much darker and intense.

In Sputnik, the story is very slow-paced. It takes its time to uncover the complete implications of what really happened in space, as well as the true nature of the weird encounter. What I disliked the most about the movie was how slow it was, especially in the first half of the film.

The performance from the cast was regular, I didn’t see anything special but the actors/actresses don’t deserve to be negatively criticized either. They did a correct job and that was it. On the other hand, the CGI was very good. The strange being had a very original design and the way it moved looked realistic and bizarre.

This isn’t really a horror story, it was even less intense and scary than the American movie I mentioned before. This is simply a scifi story with a bit of action and drama but I wouldn’t say this film belongs in the horror genre.

If you are interested in seeing an original but slow scifi story this could be a good choice. There are some intense moments but it wasn’t very shocking. It could be entertaining for fans of this type of story. Nevertheless, I think there are similar movies of superior quality that can bring more entertainment.

The best

  • The CGI regarding the strange being from space was good.

The worst

  • The movie lasts 2 hours and this length isn’t justified. In the first half of the film, it felt very slow.
