Last night I was finally able to watch one of the best movies of 2020. It was directed by Christopher Nolan, a guy who every time he releases a movie it ends up being an amazing experience. My favorites movies from him are Interstellar and Inception, 2 must-watch films for anyone who enjoys cinema.
Just like in those 2 films, in Tenet, Nolan explores a completely new and very innovative concept. In Inception, it was the dream world and how it could be weaponized, in Interstellar it was wormholes, black holes, their time distortion, and the amazing imaginary that space can provide for a film. In Tenet it is weaponized time if that is even a thing.
Explaining the new concept explored in this movie would spoil the surprise for the viewer. The most basic way to provide a glimpse regarding what makes Tenet special in a similar way to the movies I just mentioned, is that something crazy involving time is happening, and it is not good. This “something” isn’t accidental but supposedly it is being created on purpose and with hostile goals.
This “time thing” is an idea that can be as mind-blowing as the weaponized dreams in Inception. It is not as breathtaking when seeing it because the world doesn’t bend or anything like that or if there is something that bends it happens in the fourth dimension, time itself, not in the 3 physical dimensions. It does provide extremely intriguing scenes where time doesn’t behave correctly.
It can be confusing for the viewer so I advise paying a lot of attention throughout the entire film. In the first scene which is also an action scene with a lot of shots, if you pay attention you will notice one shot wasn’t normal. The movie lasts 2 and a half hours and I didn’t feel bored not even for a second.
The performance from the 2 main characters was good, not spectacular but it was all right. Secondary characters were just regular. What makes this movie special and certainly worth watching is, again, the unique idea regarding time that it explores. It can make the film confusing if you don't pay attention but so much more rewarding if you do.
If you have enjoyed the 2 Nolan's films I mentioned in the article, especially Inception, then you will most likely enjoy this film as well. It is a very original action flick that will puzzle your mind and leave some action sequences that will be hard to forget. I recommend to go watch it since it is one of the best films in 2020.
The best
- The plot explores a very original concept that as far as I know, hasn't been used in a previous film. This is why Tenet could be compared with Inception, they both explore original settings and concepts.
- It keeps the viewer intrigued throughout the film. No boring moments even though the film lasts 2 and a half hours.
The worst
- Some secondary characters didn't always have engrossing performances.
- The music wasn't that special.
