I decided to watch this movie even though it had mixed reviews on IMDb. The plot seemed interesting for me and after watching it I can conclude it was well worth the watch. I don't know a similar movie I can compare it to so I will just describe the film and explain why I like it.
The main character is a very charismatic art critic who is so eloquent that could easily trick people and make them believe his lies if he wanted to. But for the most part, he is a good person. He receives an invitation from a very wealthy man with a huge art collection and he decides to attend his mansion with a woman he just met.
When he arrives, the wealthy man makes him a request that he wasn't expecting. This part of the plot is hard to believe because there is a weird dynamic between the wealthy art collector and a reclusive artist living in a separate house but inside the same property as the mansion. The art critic finds himself surprised but decides to accept the request.
What follows are several interactions between just 3 characters, the art critic, his female companion, and the reclusive artist who is now a very old man. This isn't the first time I see artists being portrayed as very bizarre individuals with weird customs but for the most part, this artist was a gentle old man with very strong opinions about different matters.
The setting was the old mansion so everything looked classy, similar to the looks in the different Mr. Ripley movies where the main character is always surrounded by luxury and general elegance. Slowly but surely things will get out of control and the art critic will find himself in very problematic situations with no easy solutions. The thirst for success can certainly make a person do unthinkable acts.
If you are looking for a good drama-thriller that's set in a pretty location with striking scenarios you will certainly enjoy this movie. Maybe some characters were portrayed in an overly pretentious way, but I think the plot will be enjoyable for the most part.
The best
- Entertaining plot and a good final twist that won't be hard to guess.
The worst
- The rich character seems inauthentic and the artist was too weird.
