I am not sure why I haven't watched this movie before, but yesterday I found it by chance and decided to go and give it a watch. In the past, I have seen several comedy movies about the totalitarians system of Europe from the past century, some examples of these movies are Look Who's Back and Good Bye Lenin!.

There is even a Hollywood movie with Robin Williams as the main actor that makes fun of the poverty in the USSR called Moscow on the Hudson and of course, the recent movie called The Interview which makes fun of the fatty dictator in North Korea.

The Death of Stalin is the latest addition to this type of comedy. As the name indicates, most of the movie takes place after Stalin dies and we can see how other important politicians who belong to a committee start to outcompete each other in a funny way with the goal of acquiring more power for them.

The movie has several funny scenes from beginning to end, but honestly, it wasn't as funny as some of the movies I mentioned in the beginning. This is also a British production so its type of humor tends to be more elegant and fancy.

Most of the comedy scenes will be about these high range politicians trying to look good with each other, protecting their reputation and privileged positions and showing time and time again they don't have any sort of principle, their only goal is to go with the flow regardless of its direction and look good. A great example that doesn't include any spoilers can be seen in the short video below at the end of the article.

This was a fine satire that will probably make most of its viewers laugh a few times. There are also some scenes that were more about drama and not comedic in nature but this is to be expected because the entire setting of the story is actually very brutal. I recommend this film especially for those that enjoyed one of the movies I mentioned at the beginning.

The best

  • Good satire making fun of the brutal totalitarian Stalin.

The worst

  • I was expecting an even funnier movie, but it was cool.
