Small towns can have this cozy feeling that can very quickly turn into a hostile environment when a tragedy happens. Since everybody knows pretty much everyone in small towns, there are usually not many suspects in the investigation. Plus, small towns also allow for old dramas to influence the events that are happening in the present. This is the case in both this movie The Dry and in the Sharp Objects series.
Having a small town as a setting can even work in videogames, one of the best stories I have experienced with videogames was with Life is Strange 1. The small-town setting was just perfect for this story, and the mystery was awesome.
It would be cool if Netflix produced some type of interactive murder mystery story set in a small town. They have already produced an interactive story with Black Mirror called Bandersnatch, and doing this again would be appreciated by most subscribers I believe.

Despite the fact The Dry is a great film, there aren't that many well-known names associated with it. Eric Bana is the only one I was able to recognize from previous movies. His most popular previous role was Hulk of course. For me, he was the first actor to ever play the Hulk role. There are 3 so far, him, Edward Norton, and Mark Ruffalo. Like Spiderman and Batman, Hulk appears to be a superhero role who is constantly being played by different actors.
For the most part, he only appeared in either smaller productions or playing a secondary role, so it was nice to finally see him playing the main character in a good film. The guy is a great actor and his talent hasn't been properly used by the film industry so far.

Eric Bana plays a character named Aaron Falk, he is a federal agent who is returning to his hometown for the funeral of his best friend Luke from childhood and his family. They were murdered with a shotgun, and there is a belief that Luke suddenly became crazy and killed his family.
His presence isn't really appreciated by some of the people living in this town, because there is an old tragedy that happened 20 years ago where a girl died on a river. The tragedy somehow also involved Luke, so the resentment and grudge are real and deep.
Since he is a federal agent, he has the skills to investigate all types of crimes, so Luke's parents ask him to take a look into this case because they believe Luke is innocent. Aaron then joins forces with the local police sergeant and the 2 will work together to discover what really happened.
Throughout the film, there will be flashbacks 20 years into the past, where we could see Aaron, Luke, Ellie (the girl who died in the river), and Gretchen all having fun together. They were all friends with each other and were spending time together on a constant basis. The tragedy really disrupted their lives.
Aaron will have to deal with remorse for what happened in the past, hostility from a character who really hates him, and then with the local people who might or might not tell the truth when he interviews them. At least he isn't all alone though, some people are willing to help him so the town can have peace and know for sure what really happened. Since this is a murder mystery, there are surprises and twists along the way and I was very happy with the way they were presented.

How were the performance, the settings and the camera work?
Eric Bana did a great job playing his role. His character is usually kind of like a tough guy, but there is also a scene where he makes a great job portraying a very disturbed emotional state. Secondary characters were also good, I didn't see any weak or unconvincing performance from any member of the cast.
The settings were great. Having the story taking place in a small town gives plenty of opportunities to create a deep drama that has an important effect on the characters. Small towns are more intimate compared to big cities, and the combination with a murder mystery plot is something I enjoy very much.
I also enjoyed the cinematography. The use of camera angles in some key scenes was really nice and will intrigue the viewers. One of the twists works very well thanks to the way they placed the camera during that important moment. The way they portray certain scenes will also work to induce suspicion towards a particular character.

All of this results in an excellent film, the plot was terrific and Bana's performance was really convincing. The setting, the twist, the way some important events are presented, all of this make The Dry a worth watching film. If you appreciated a small-town setting, and if you are entertained by a murder mystery coupled with deep drama, then The Dry would be a great choice to watch.

Eric Bana hizo un gran trabajo interpretando su papel.
