The Last Black Man in San Francisco - “Let us give each other the courage to see beyond the stories we were born into!”

I have been eyeing this movie for a good while and last night I finally decided to watch it. This film received good reviews everywhere so I was excited about it but now that I have seen it I really don't understand why people seemed to "loved" it.

In the story there are 2 normal black guys who don't have too much money and also appear to be unemployed. They are young but clearly adults and they are so close they spend their days together and also live together with the grandpa of one of them.

The central point of the story is about a pretty house and how one of the 2 guys believes this house is a part of his family legacy because he thinks it was built by his grandad and hence, a reason to be proud about who he is and where he comes from.

This person comes from a dysfunctional family and perhaps this belief helped him overcome the fact that his family was crappy. I guess sometimes people prefer to believe a pretty lie than an ugly truth.

The house is currently owned by an older white couple and these 2 guys put a lot of hours into taking care of the house even though they don't own it nor they work there. This obsession with the house is somehow similar to the obsession we see at the end of the Korean movie Parasite where a young character ends the film by daydreaming about the pretty house, only that in this case, his entire life is conditioned by thoughts about this house and the always present sense of proud because "his grandfather built it".

There are a few dramatic scenes but none of them were intense enough, the film felt like a low-quality production and it wasn't amusing, intriguing, or dramatic enough. I try to understand why this movie has been reviewed as it was a masterpiece and I honestly don't get it.

This is far from a masterpiece, I don't even consider it a good movie. Maybe the reason behind its high ratings is just because this was a drama about a black person and some people consider it virtuous to give a high rating based on race?

I don't know who could enjoy watching a movie like this one, there are so many dramas out there that are much better. Perhaps I didn't know how to appreciate this film? I am not sure but what I can tell is that this 2-hour film was a big disappointment for me.

The best

  • It shows a deep and honest friendship between 2 guys.
  • It shows the best parts of San Francisco's architecture.

The worst

  • Boring story.
  • The drama was nothing special.

It was an amazing movie! It took me back to when I first moved to San Francisco. It is the first movie I've ever seen set in SF that actually conveyed the feeling of living in SF back then. But it went further than a visceral memory to also show me an aspect of life in SF that I hadn't been consciously aware of before. There was a quiet commentary on an undercurrent of what class and race relationships were like there that never bothered to hit spell it out. Which is how it was when lived also. It's what everyone was supposed to pretend wasn't real. That's San Francisco.
