Crítica en Español

This was one of the major releases from Netflix back in December but I decided to give it a watch last night. Excellent drama movies involving space have been done throughout the decades, Interstellar, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Contact are my 3 favorites. The existent of so many great movies with similar themes makes it harder for The Midnight Sky to receive praise.

The main character is played by the well-known actor George Clooney, he is a reputable scientist with extensive work regarding the exploration of other celestial bodies to give humanity a second home and improve its chances of survival in case of disasters.

Este fue uno de los principales lanzamientos de Netflix en diciembre, pero decidí darle un vistazo anoche. Se han realizado excelentes películas dramáticas relacionadas con el espacio a lo largo de las décadas, Interstellar, 2001: A Space Odyssey y Contact son mis 3 favoritas. La existencia de tantas películas geniales con temas similares hace que sea más difícil para The Midnight Sky recibir elogios.

El personaje principal es interpretado por el conocido actor George Clooney, un científico de renombre con un extenso trabajo en la exploración de otros cuerpos celestes para darle a la humanidad un segundo hogar y mejorar sus posibilidades de supervivencia en caso de desastres.

He is living all alone, in a remote station in the north pole. Something horrible has happened on our planet Earth, and he is trying to find spaceships to warn them about what has happened on our planet to prevent them from returning. Because if they return, their lives will be at risk. It is better for people in spaceships to skip their return to Earth and to leave forever.

Due to his loneliness, his age, and an illness he is suffering from, he begins to get sloppy when suddenly, and to his surprise, he finds a little girl hiding in the station with him. He tries to contact other people who left the station to come back and get her but is unable to do so. His only choice is to keep the girl and take care of her.

The dramatic part of the film begins when he finally discovers one returning spaceship and tries to contact the crew. It turns out, he needs to go to another antenna which is quite far if he wants an opportunity to sending them a message. The problem is that the weather in that place is extreme, and going outdoors is risky, especially if you need to travel a lot of miles with a kid.

Vive solo, en una estación remota en el polo norte. Algo horrible ha sucedido en nuestro planeta Tierra, y está tratando de encontrar naves espaciales para advertirles sobre lo que ha sucedido en nuestro planeta para evitar que regresen. Porque si regresan, sus vidas correrán peligro. Es mejor para las personas en naves espaciales evitar su regreso a la Tierra e irse a vivir a otro planeta.

Debido a su soledad, su edad y una enfermedad que padece, comienza a descuidarse cuando de repente, y para su sorpresa, encuentra a una niña escondida en la estación con él. Intenta ponerse en contacto con otras personas que abandonaron la estación para que vuelvan a buscarla, pero no puede hacerlo. Su única opción es quedarse con la niña y cuidarla.

La parte dramática de la película comienza cuando finalmente descubre una nave espacial que regresa e intenta contactar a la tripulación. Resulta que necesita ir a otra antena que está bastante lejos si quiere tener la oportunidad de enviarles un mensaje. El problema es que el clima en ese lugar es extremo y salir al aire libre es arriesgado, especialmente si necesita viajar muchos kilómetros con una niña.

In his journey to the other antenna, he will have to face several dangerous situations. However, one of the things I disliked the most, was the incredible coincidence of certain events. For example, the first time he manages to contact the ship, about 10 seconds later, the ship is suddenly hit with small asteroids that interrupt their communication. I mean, what are the chances of this happening exactly at that moment?

Not only the scientist is forced to overcome serious difficulties, but the same will also happen to the crew on the ship. Life isn't easy in space, and if your home has become compromised by an apocalyptic event, then that makes things much worse.

The film tries to be touching and funny at different times, but for me, it didn't work. The pace is incredibly slow, and the story is far from epic. With so many epic space movies such as the ones I mentioned at the beginning of the article, each of them exploring deep topics, it is difficult to recommend this film. I guess this was planned as a major movie because Clooney is no small actor, but ultimately this is a very forgettable film albeit with some good-looking scenes.

En su viaje hacia la otra antena, deberá enfrentarse a varias situaciones peligrosas. Sin embargo, una de las cosas que más me disgustó fue la increíble coincidencia de ciertos eventos. Por ejemplo, la primera vez que logra contactar con la nave, unos 10 segundos después, la nave es repentinamente impactada por pequeños asteroides que interrumpen su comunicación. ¿Cuáles son las posibilidades de que esto suceda exactamente en ese momento?

No solo el científico se ve obligado a superar serias dificultades, sino que también le pasará lo mismo a la tripulación de la nave. La vida no es fácil en el espacio, y si su hogar se ha visto comprometido por un evento apocalíptico, eso empeora mucho las cosas.

La película intenta ser conmovedora y divertida en diferentes momentos, pero para mí no funcionó. El ritmo es increíblemente lento y la historia está lejos de ser épica. Con tantas películas espaciales épicas como las que mencioné al principio del artículo, cada una de las cuales explora temas profundos, va a ser difícil recomendar esta película. Supongo que esto fue planeado como una película importante porque Clooney no es un actor pequeño, pero en última instancia, esta es una película muy olvidable, aunque con algunas escenas bonitas.
