I don’t think I have watched a Chilean production before, so this is probably the first time I see something produced in Chile. The Mole Agent is a documentary about a serious topic but approached in such a bizarre way that it ends up having a lot of funny moments but also several sad ones.

The documentary is about an old man in his 80s, who is hired to go live in a nursing home for 3 months, spy it from the inside, and reports his findings to the person who hired him. The reason why this man was hired is that a family member of one of the residents in the nursing wanted to know for sure if her mother was being treated appropriately. The only way to know this was by putting a mole inside the institution. Hence, the mole agent was born.

No creo que haya visto una producción chilena antes, así que esta es probablemente la primera vez que veo algo producido en Chile. The Mole Agent es un documental sobre un tema serio, pero abordado de forma tan bizarra que acaba teniendo muchos momentos divertidos pero también varios tristes.

El documental trata sobre un anciano de unos 80 años, que es contratado para ir a vivir a un hogar de ancianos durante 3 meses, espiar desde adentro e informar sus hallazgos a la persona que lo contrató. La razón por la que este hombre fue contratado es porque un familiar de uno de los residentes, quería saber con certeza si su madre estaba siendo tratada adecuadamente. La única forma de saberlo era metiendo un agente dentro de la institución. Y de esta manera, nació el agente topo.

The documentary begins with the hiring process, we see several old men applying for the job, and some of them were really clueless about technology. It was important for the mole agent to make proper use of modern tools, because the spying and the reporting required it. No reasons are given regarding why they choose the man who would become the mole agent, I didn’t see many differences between him and the others. However, the documentary only shows glimpses of their interviewing process and not the complete conversations so this might explain that.

We will see a lot of personal conversations involving the agent and other residents. He arrived as a spy but left as a friend of a lot of people that live there. We will see scenes involving drama but also happy moments, and even romantic jokes between the old folks. The suspicion*** about mistreatment and abuse weren’t confirmed, in fact, it was actually the complete opposite. The old people were receiving very appropriate care.

El documental comienza con el proceso de contratación, vemos a varios ancianos postularse para el trabajo y algunos de ellos no tenían ni idea de tecnología. Era importante que el agente topo hiciera un uso adecuado de las herramientas modernas, porque el espionaje y el trabajo así lo requerían. No se dan razones sobre por qué eligen al hombre que se convertiría en el agente topo, no vi muchas diferencias entre él y los demás. Sin embargo, el documental solo muestra pocas escenas de su proceso de entrevista y no las conversaciones completas.

Veremos muchas conversaciones personales entre el agente y otros residentes. Llegó como espía pero se fue como amigo de mucha gente que vive allí. Veremos escenas dramáticas pero también momentos felices, e incluso bromas románticas entre los viejos. La sospecha de maltrato y abuso no se confirmó, de hecho, fue todo lo contrario. Los ancianos estaban recibiendo una atención muy adecuada.

One thing I didn’t like was that the main reason to infiltrate a mole was to observe if a particular resident was receiving good care and this particular resident only appears in the documentary about 3 or 4 times. Most of the documentary is about other residents. It is mentioned that this old lady wasn’t very sociable and didn’t like to speak too much, so this might explain the reason why she only appeared in so few scenes.

The documentary also shows how sad can life be for old people who are abandoned in this type of place. Several cases are shown of residents that don’t receive visits and as a result, feel lonely. The mole agent develops a lot of sympathy for residents in this situation, and he even mentions this to the person who hired him. The documentary doesn’t have a lot of surprises and will end pretty much as most viewers expect it to end.

If you are interested in watching an old man playing a spy in a nursing home you might find this entertaining enough. Once he arrives at the nursing home the documentary pace gets slow. It even bored me out a little bit after the first hour, but I appreciate the original idea behind this production. I mean, making plans to infiltrate a nursing home, and giving spy tools like secret cameras to an old man isn’t something you hear about every day.

Una cosa que no me gustó fue que la razón principal para infiltrar a un topo era observar si un residente en particular estaba recibiendo una buena atención y este residente en particular solo aparece en el documental unas 3 o 4 veces. La mayor parte del documental trata sobre otros residentes. Se menciona que esta anciana no era muy sociable y no le gustaba hablar demasiado, por lo que esto podría explicar la razón por la que solo apareció en tan pocas escenas.

El documental también muestra lo triste que puede ser la vida para las personas mayores que se encuentran abandonadas en este tipo de lugares. Se muestran varios casos de residentes que no reciben visitas y, como resultado, se sienten solos. El agente topo desarrolla mucha simpatía por los residentes en esta situación, e incluso se lo menciona a la persona que lo contrató. El documental no tiene muchas sorpresas y terminará casi como la mayoría de los espectadores esperan que termine.

Si está interesado en ver a un anciano jugando a un espía en un asilo de ancianos, de repente encuentras esto lo suficientemente entretenido. Una vez que llega a la residencia de ancianos, el ritmo del documental se ralentiza. Incluso me aburrió un poco después de la primera hora, pero aprecio la idea original detrás de esta producción. Hacer planes para infiltrarse en un asilo de ancianos y darle herramientas espías como cámaras secretas a un anciano no es algo de lo que se oiga todos los días.

• It was very slow and boring at times. I guess this shouldn’t be a surprise since the documentary takes place in a nursing home.
