This movie could have been great, it really could have been but the regular execution makes it an average slasher film with 30yos playing the part of the typical dumb teenagers. There are only a handful of characters and the entire plot happens in a very remote fancy house.
The story begins with 2 friends that work together and are planning to go spend the weekend at a very cool house with their corresponding boyfriend and girlfriend. Since the beginning, we can sense the 2 coworkers find themselves very comfortable with each other, and there is a little bit of romantic drama within the plot that for me was very boring.
Once they arrive at the house, there was a small dispute with the man who was renting the house, but I believe this was just a gimmick to throw in a racist accusation that some people seem to love doing so much. This silly argument was totally irrelevant to the plot.

There is a twist in the movie but it is not that mind-blowing and it doesn't change the fact this movie is very average with nothing close to greatness. This group of friends happens to also be very dysfunctional because they can't manage to do anything together. The trip was supposed to be a cool time to spend with each other but they always get divided one way or another, despite the fact there were only 4 friends.
Eventually, one of them discovers something very creepy in the house, and slowly but surely all hell will break loose. The film goes from a silly drama involving immature 30yos, to a slasher where they find themselves outplayed by a disturbing person.
I would only recommend this film to peeps that are looking for a new movie about a meticulous serial killer. You will need to tolerate several stupid attitudes and decisions from these 4 30yos but at least the killer character was somewhat original, especially his method to kill his victims. If you want to see a cooler modern story about a creepy murder, I would recommend you to check the movies Creep and Creep 2. I can imagine that type of psycho being the one behind the events of The Rental.

The best
- There are like 2 or 3 well-made suspense scenes but it is not enough.
The worst
- Unimaginative plot.
- The 4 friends were very immature for their age.
