One of the first films ever created by George Lucas was THX 1138, a story about a futuristic dystopian world where humans live like chattel of the state, completely controlled, and even taking mandatory drugs!

In this dystopian world, people don't have normal names but rather designations. The main character of the story is THX 1138, that's his "name", and he works assembling humanoid droids that serve as the police.

Every person has a shaved head, and they all wear white clothes. The craziest part of this totalitarian system is that each person is forced to take some drugs that keep their mind numb and prevent them from developing feelings for other people. This concept of using mandatory drug doses to control the people is also explored in the movie Equilibrium and in the videogame We Happy Few.

Once the viewer sees how this society works, the big part of the plot will begin that resembles the efforts in escaping seen in the movie The Island from 2005, but with less excitement, more unanswered questions, and a more abrupt and open-ended ending.

This dystopian world had some creative looks, and its looks were probably influenced by 2001 Space Oddysey because the use of the color white was abundant. The film also shows several interesting sightings such as the equivalent of a modern religious confession "chamber" that only uses a screen with a face and a recorded voice saying generic things. Nevertheless, it can get slow at times and somewhat boring but its length is just 1.5 hours.

If you are looking for an interesting scifi setting and you enjoyed the film Equilibrium then you should check this flick out as well. It is not as exciting as Equilibrium though, it is slower and more focused on the drama about the dystopian lifestyle and not on how to bring everything down.

The best

  • The totalitarian world was well-made.

The worst

  • Not as profound and engaging as it tries to be.
