Tigers Are Not Afraid - Disappointing Mexican "horror" film

Review by @dedicatedguy · 2428d · of Tigers Are Not Afraid

This movie was a major disappointment for me. I decided to watch it because it was included at the top of the list of Rotten Tomatoes best horror movies from 2019. I honestly don’t know what these people were thinking when they included this awful Mexican film.

First of all, the story isn’t really a horror history. It is drama mixed with a little bit of crime and fantasy. The characters are criminal kids with their little gang that live off the crimes they commit. It is very tragic to see how some poor Mexican kids need to live in order to survive and have enough food to eat. If there is anything scary in the film, it is the consequences of having poor kids without adults to take care of them and how this affects their lives.

There are a few “horror” scenes with what seems to be spirits/ghosts/apparitions but nothing too scary. The movie cannot compete with other horror major productions from 2019 such as Doctor Sleep or Us. They aren’t even in the same league.

Does the following image look like the definition of horror, or at least like something fun? The answer is of course not.

I guess that if this Mexican movie was promoted as a drama with a touch of fantasy my expectations would have been much more consistent with what I saw. But I came here wanting to watch a horror film and this is not what I received. I was excited because I recently watched another Hispanic horror film, this one was from Argentina called Terrified and it was very cool.

The acting wasn’t very polished but I guess blaming kids for this is unfair, although in the movie Once upon a time in America, there are a lot of criminal kids and those scenes were of much better quality and with a more intriguing story.

Ultimately, I can only recommend this film if you enjoy Hispanic drama with poor kids. This movie has little else to offer, there is a mystic or fantasy-like element in the movie, which is why it was included in the horror genre, but 95% of the story isn’t focused on that. It is rather focused on the troubled lives of the little criminal kids gang.

The best

  • Interesting to see the type of life some Mexican kids have to endure if they are poor and without parents.
  • It is a short movie, not even 1 hour 30 minutes.

The worst

  • This isn’t a horror movie.
  • I didn’t enjoy the acting of the kids.
