Unsolved Mysteries - My review of the new episodes released in October 2020.

A few months ago Netflix released their own remake of the very popular but now-defunct "Unsolved Mysteries" show that consisted of presenting the known information about this type of mysteries with the hopes of reaching someone with new information and find a solution to what happened. This past October, they released a new batch of episodes that I suppose can be as considered season 2, just as IMDb does on its website.

Before the Netflix remake, the show had a host which allowed the viewers to relate this show with a known face. In this new iteration of the show, there is no host. What we see on the screen are scenes recreating the events that took place, the victims sharing their opinions and thoughts, as well as police officers and detectives sharing their insight.

When talking about mysteries, the ones that intrigue me the most are those with the most unexplainable events. This is why some episodes in this new season weren't very interesting to me, these boring episodes were about regular crimes like kidnapping or murder, and the mystery in one of these cases wasn't about the nature of the crime, but rather about who committed the crime itself. I am specifically talking about the episodes "Stolen Kids" and "Death Row Fugitive". Those were the most boring for me.

On the other hand, my favorite episode was called "Tsunami Spirits" because I believe this was a case a massive hallucinations affecting a lot of people in a community that went through extremely difficult times. It was very interesting to learn about all the crazy and perhaps even paranormal stuff these Japanese people experienced after the brutal tsunami. There is always the case these paranormal sightings were real of course, but one plausible explanation is that this was a way for the people living here to overcome their emotional trauma, so their brains tricked them into seeing these weird apparitions. What was interesting is the number of people experiencing the same. Really spooky and just the type of mystery I like.

Another cool episode was called "A Death in Oslo". What first appeared to have been a suicide, might as well have been a secret intelligence operation from unknown foreign powers involving professional assassins. A mystery woman, who hasn't been identified as of yet, was found dead in her hotel room. The most interesting part of this episode was when a person who has experience working for intelligence agencies, began to explain how certain decisions and modus operandi of the victim was similar to what is taught to the agents of these intelligence agencies. It was a very educative episode and my second favorite one after the potentially paranormal sightings in "Tsunami Spirits".

The remaining 2 episodes weren't as intriguing as these 2 but they were not boring like the ones I mentioned a few paragraphs above. In the end, this was a very entertaining show with different types of real-life mysteries for different tastes. Most are of real-world criminal cases but there is also the "paranormal" episode for those who enjoy that. If you enjoy learning about real mysteries this show will be a good watch.
