Usually we can easily identify a work of horror, this classification has its own world, laws and paranormal, but with every series by author and director Mike Flanagan leaves us confused in its classification; Is it horror or drama with a hint of fantasy? This question was repeated with the Netflix series Midnight Mass on September 24, 2021, a seven-episode series written, directed, and starring Kate Siegel, Zag Guilford, Samantha Sloyan and Hamish Linklater.

The series tells of a very small community on an island cut off from the mainland, when a mysterious young priest arrives with a series of unexplained supernatural events and hidden omens, and the community is dominated by religious fervor that causes them to drift to pay the price for miracles.

Slow start, wild end

The first five episodes are a very slow drama about a group of characters in the island community that certainly does not have anything special, as the author did not provide the backgrounds of these characters, the product of what they are, and contented himself with a brief review within the dialogue about their previous lives, and continued for five hours to present scenes Dramatic in traditional stories does not help advance the plot that has been slow to the wild ending that carried it all.

Disastrous characters, dull and traditional and nothing special about them to follow. Five episodes without an exciting event that prompts the follow-up, and non-stop monologues. The author barely managed to build a balanced dialogue in some scenes, as the dialogue is dominated by a long character where each character performs a long chain of talk and then answers the other with the same The way, even if the character is interesting, these walls of speech destroy it, and even if the series is based on philosophy and symbolism, it must have logic in making dialogue, which I lack, because I often lose focus from following all this talk and therefore I cannot understand it.

Then, in the sixth episode, he presented the beginning of the events and the interpretation, also in the form of a narrative on the tongue of the characters themselves over pictures of quick scenes, and then the end, which is certainly expected.

I don't think any scenes are surprising at the end, though it was very good, exciting and sequential and well-planned. I enjoyed the sixth and seventh episodes after losing interest in the first five episodes, and I didn't understand who could write two episodes like that why five drama-filled episodes full of philosophy without an iota of interest.

Comienzo lento, final salvaje

A good horror writer doesn't have to be a good drama writer

Mike Flanagan's school of horror dramas is consistent. In his previous dramas "The Haunting of Hill House" 2018, "The Haunting of Bly Manor" 2020, he followed the same style of presenting horror, with a lot of drama and a lot of philosophy. I think he is a good horror writer, who can discuss ideas and taboos through horror but he is not a good drama writer. The original characters are usually uninteresting, dull characters that you can see in any poor drama, drowning out a lot of monologues.

Much like Stephen King's school of writing, metaphysical genius discusses important topics over a staggering number of pages, full of drama and pointless scenes, a genius idea buried beneath long conversations about ideas far removed from what he is discussing and presenting.

Flanagan used the vampire legend, the same details in which various vampire works were presented, to produce a work completely different from the vampire drama and cinema, this proves that different works can be presented from that legend, not including Dracula, Edward Cullen, Damon or Stefan Salvatore, and even Different from what Brad Pitt did in Interview with the Vampire 1994, something new, different and innovative.

A map of the characters in the series Midnight Mass

Certainly the series belongs to the drama of symbolism, although its classification is drama, suspense, horror and mystery, but the series lacked a good mystery, and certainly if you are looking for direct horror, you will not find it here, because the horror used is a cover for the idea only, the idea that I was amazed and disturbed by its completion in front of my eyes in the episode Last.

I was amazed that she is indeed very genius, using a myth to discuss religious topics that all filmmakers are sensitive to is something that indicates genius, but it annoyed me because nothing appears except with the last episode and the difficulty of thinking, as if you are not a very intelligent viewer you will lose the message and will not understand the purpose of working in the origin.

I don't think philosophy and allegory are justifications for the work to be solid, unsmooth and boring for the most part, I think the author could have made a more interesting adventure to present that idea.

Sister Bev Definitely the most hated, most professional and quality character.

the most interesting character in the work, most striking to the idea of what religious fanaticism can do to a person, as he finds himself the only human worthy of God's love and you can't argue with that fact in his eyes.

Samantha Sloyan presented the character as the best that could be presented from her writing, and the most distinguished dialogue in the work was in the last episode in the scene between Biff and Riley's mother in less than a minute, so you certainly don't need tons of dialogue to advance philosophy.

Perhaps the writing did not help present the character in a clearer and better way. In many scenes, although Biff's character is clear in its orientation, it is vague, and does not know who Biff is and what her background is.

Island community members

I think Flanagan as a director gave his best details of the small island community, the houses, the marina and even the characters as a picture. I also think that the actors did the best they could through dramatic writing. Although Riley and Eren's character are supposed to be main, they weren't. Throughout an entire episode, they had a long conversational scene about each of them imagining the idea of death, which was cut from it in the episode. The latter, but I did not understand its relationship to the main idea presented by the work, you may eventually discover the connection since they are among the characters who sense something strange but are really not interesting at all.

If you are looking for horror, this is not the right job Simply this work does not present horror as an abstract or even its symbolic classification, it is a slow dramatic horror, lacking many details that could have made it better. Work because he is a graduate of the same school.
