Dark City (1998) Scifi Movie Review

Review by @devpress · 2010d · of Dark City

Each week I usually post horror, psychological, thriller movie reviews. But today I thought I should share the sci-fi movie review instead. Today I want to give my views on the late 90s movie Dark City. It was the movie that was released when I was like in 9th std maybe. I watched this movie like 6 years later.

So here's my review of Sci-Fi movie Dark City.

Story

If you watch some of the YouTube videos about this movie. You would come up with various "explained" theories. I know there is no official explanation for the movie. So think of it like the David lynch type multi explanation type movies. This movie is one of those movies where you would try to relate it with the real life scenarios.

Here the lead actor wakes up with no memory. And realizes that he is trapped in a city simulation where he is running away a criminal. Then he meets the actress and things take another turn. Meanwhile he comes across the group that is running through the simulation and tries to find a way out. Entire movie is executed around this plot. And you kind of feel something like this is pretty much what you can relate in 2021.

How can we relate this with current life in 2021? We are living in simulation created by news and the media. Where they kind of design the narrative and build fake picture of society and manipulate people for their own agenda accordingly. And we all have our own end to meet at the end of the day. So it's pretty strong story to relate to.

Characters

You may find that the character development in the story is pretty quick. Here the lead actor has to come in senses with a lot of things. A lot of characters have their own memories and the scenario to play. And so the lead actor would develop all of them in his encounter. It seems like the character development is lot quicker than most of the similar twisted movies.

I loved the performance of the lead actor here. I thought Jennifer Connelly turned out to be not just some arm candy girl there. She played pretty good role of the potential lover of the lead actor and she kind of puts the things in motion for him. And that character acting is done pretty good over there. So I loved the actors all of them there.

Direction and Plot Execution

I think after watching a lot of David lynch and tried to solve puzzles around his movies and creating new theories of his movies. I kind of ignored a lot of movies which were worth watching. But the dark city kind of opened my eyes for new stories and this turned out to be pretty good approach for to view things with new perspective.

This movie in todays time could be executed lot differently and people could have done better justice today. But it seems like the current execution is not bad. For a movie in 1998 the movie was pretty well executed. And we have to appreciate the story and the movie execution. I loved it and my honest opinion there were many small things in the movie worth keeping tab.

Best Part

I think best part was the story. I would say the actors did their part. The story and direction was good enough. For the movie in 1998 the concept was way ahead of it's time. Compared to modern scifi movies and the stories. I think this was good execution from the Director. I'd say this is definitely a good movie in scifi category.

Worst Part

I'd say considering we didn't have much good graphics back then. That is the only thing that would make you feel like this was poorly executed on that part. But the movie if were to be designed today it would turn out to be lot better now. A lot of people would be put off with the poor graphics and lack of proper CGI.

So should you watch this movie?

I'd recommend if you are fan of the scifi and the noir type of the fusion movies. You should definitely go ahead with this type of the movie. You would surely love the content of this type especially if you have scifi interests say something in simulation genre.

I enjoyed this film although I did find lots of it to be rather unrealistic. But i suppose that is the point behind Scifi in the first place. Which came first? This or the Matrix?
