Childhood nostalgia in a film: "The School Of Rock" (2003).- ENG/ESP.

Greetings, Hive friends! Happy start of the week to everyone. I love listening to music, I can spend an entire day (and have) listening to songs from the genres I love the most, and of course, I'm drawn to movies that have to do with musicals or artist biopics. For me, The School of Rock was a refreshing movie, since movies that tend to show this genre usually do it from the perspective of addictions, sex and debauchery (I'm not saying all of them, of course, but most of them), but in this one we see a funny and emotional story, which gives us to understand that everyone, even without being musicians, can be part of a musical universe. Without further ado, let's start the review.

¡Saludos, amigos de Hive! Feliz inicio de semana para todos. Me encanta escuchar música, puedo pasar un día entero (y lo he hecho) escuchando canciones de los géneros que más me gustan, y por supuesto, me atraen las películas que tengan que ver con musicales o biografías de artistas. Para mí, The School of Rock fue una película refrescante, dado que las películas que se inclinan a mostrar este género suelen hacerlo desde la perspectiva de las adicciones, el sexo y el desenfreno (no digo que todas, claro está, pero sí la mayoría), pero en esta vemos una historia divertida y emotiva, que nos da a entender que todos, aun sin ser músicos, podemos ser parte de un universo musical. Sin más que decirles, empecemos la reseña.

The plot begins with Dewey Finn: he is a crazy guitarist and passionate about rock, but despite his great love and talent that overflows, life does not smile on him. After a club performance that didn't end in the best way, we move on to meet Dewey's apartment, or rather, the apartment he shares with his roommate Ned, and his girlfriend Patty. However, if it wasn't enough to fail with his band "No Vacancy", who on top of that replace him after the club performance, also his roommate's girlfriend pressures him to pay his rent debt or move out.

La trama inicia con Dewey Finn: él es un guitarrista alocado y apasionado por el rock, pero pese a su gran amor y el talento que desborda, la vida no le sonríe. Tras una presentación en un club que no terminó de la mejor manera, pasamos a conocer el apartamento de Dewey, o mejor dicho, el apartamento que comparte con su compañero de cuarto Ned, y su novia Patty. Sin embargo, si no era suficiente con fracasar con su banda “No Vacancy”, quienes encima lo reemplazan tras la actuación en el club, también la novia de su compañero de cuarto le presiona para que pague su deuda de la renta o se mude.

Dewey seems to see no way out of this situation, until Ned gets a call for a job opportunity, as it turns out Ned is a teacher, and the call is from Principal Mullins, of a top school, who calls Ned informing him about a temporary position as a substitute teacher. Dewey doesn't think twice and decides to take the position, posing as his friend Ned, but adopting the alias "Mr. S". This represents a great clash of personalities between Dewey or "Mr. S" and his new students, because they are facing a teacher who does not keep up appearances and is just as unrestrained as in his band, when they are used to serious and severe adults.

Dewey parece no ver salida a esta situación, hasta que Ned recibe una llamada para una oportunidad de trabajo, pues resulta que Ned es profesor, y la llamada es de la directora Mullins, de un colegio de primer nivel, que llama a Ned informándole sobre un puesto temporal como profesor substituto. Dewey no lo piensa dos veces y decide tomar el puesto, haciéndose pasar por su amigo Ned, pero adoptando el alias de “Sr. S”. Esto representa un gran choque de personalidades entre Dewey o el “Sr.S” y sus nuevos alumnos, porque están ante un profesor que no guarda las apariencias y es igual de desenfrenado que en su banda, cuando ellos están acostumbrados a adultos serios y severos.

Soon our Mr. S realizes that his students have musical gifts, they are talented but they are also like hidden gems that need polishing. This is how he comes up with the idea of having his rock band with the kids, which will also allow him to audition for the Battle of the Bands. Thus, believing that he finally has all the cards in his favor, he starts to educate the kids in the world of rock, and also assigns a role to each of them in the band, so we have a guitarist and vocalist, a drummer, a boy to play the keyboard and a girl to play the bass, and we can't leave out the backup singers and a manager.

Pronto nuestro Sr. S se da cuenta de que sus alumnos tienen dotes musicales, son talentosos pero son también como unas gemas escondidas que necesitan pulirse. Así es como se le ocurre tener su banda de rock con los chicos, que también le permitirá audicionar en la Batalla de las Bandas. De esta manera, creyendo que finalmente tiene todas las cartas a favor, empieza a educar a los niños en el mundo del rock, y también les asigna un papel a cada uno en la banda, de manera que tenemos a un guitarrista y vocalista, un baterista, un chico para tocar el teclado y una chica para tocar el bajo, y no podemos dejar de lado a las cantantes de apoyo y a una manager.

Although the idea of band starts as a personal interest for Mr. S, being together in rehearsals makes the students face their insecurities and learn to know what their interests are, interests they might not discover elsewhere because they come from conservative families. With Dewey, the kids learn that they are talented, that everyone has an important role in the band, and that if they give up living up to others' expectations, they can use their musical gifts for something great, something that makes them feel fulfilled. The boys and Mr. S are accomplices for rehearsals, for auditioning for the battle of the bands, and for serving as support for each other. Now, predictably, at some point it all has to come crashing down.

Aunque la idea de la banda inicia como un interés personal para el Sr. S, el estar unidos en los ensayos hace que los estudiantes se enfrenten a sus inseguridades y aprendan a conocer cuáles son sus intereses, intereses que no podrían descubrir en otro lado por venir de familias conservadoras. Con Dewey, los niños aprenden que son talentosos, que todos tienen un papel importante en la banda y que si abandonan cumplir con las expectativas de los demás, pueden usar sus dotes musicales para algo grande, algo que les haga sentir plenos. Los chicos y el Sr. S son cómplices para los ensayos, para audicionar para la batalla de las bandas, y para servir de apoyo los unos a los otros. Ahora bien, como era de esperar, en algún momento todo se debe venir abajo

This occurs when Mr. S's identity is discovered after Ned learns that his friend has been impersonating him, something quite inconceivable to his girlfriend. At the same time, Dewey has to deal with annoying parents who demand explanations for the current behavior of their children, who seem to be focusing on music and a performance they have never heard of. The children have become their own mini versions of Mr. S, now being more true to their tastes, freer and increasingly exploring and loving their talents, but Dewey doesn't fare so well pointing out this fact, because now with his identity exposed he must pay the consequences of his fraud and is back to where he started: from scratch.

Esto ocurre cuando la identidad del Sr. S es descubierta luego de que Ned se entera de que su amigo se ha estado haciendo pasar por él, algo bastante inconcebible para su novia. Al mismo tiempo, Dewey tiene que enfrentarse antes unos molestos padres que exigen explicaciones sobre el actual comportamiento de sus hijos, que parecen estar enfocándose en la música y en una presentación de la que ellos no habían oído hablar. Los niños se han convertido en sus propias mini versiones del Sr. S, siendo ahora más fieles a sus gustos, más libres y cada vez más explorando y amando sus talentos, pero a Dewey no le va tan bien señalando este hecho, porque ahora con su identidad al descubierto debe pagar las consecuencias de su fraude y vuelve a estar como empezó: desde cero.

What will happen to the gang? Now without the leader who created it, the kids must use their wits to manage it and not let it fall apart, even though Dewey thinks it's all over. I assure you that watching this happen is fun and also a testament to the influence Dewey has left on them, as he has taught them to take charge of what they want and make it happen. Not only do we see the development in the kids, but in their parents, who learn to reconcile their differences and support their children with their foray into rock. Everyone's talent shines and closes mouths, and it is rock that has allowed them to see themselves with different eyes, with the eyes with which they had never seen them before.

¿Qué pasará con la banda? Ahora sin el líder que la creó, los niños deben recurrir a su ingenio para dirigirla y no dejar que se venga abajo, aunque Dewey piense que todo acabó. Les aseguro que ver cómo esto pasa es divertido y también una prueba de la influencia que Dewey ha dejado en ellos, pues les ha enseñado a tomar las riendas de aquello que desean y hacerlo realidad. No sólo vemos el desarrollo en los niños, sino en sus padres, que aprenden a conciliar sus diferencias y a apoyar a sus hijos con su incursión en el rock. El talento de todos brilla y cierra bocas, y es el rock el que les ha permitido verse con otros ojos, con los ojos con los que nunca antes los habían visto.

Needless to say, it is one of my favorite movies of the 2000's and I doubt that its essence is something easy to replicate nowadays. Also, having Jack Black as the main character is something that undoubtedly makes this movie entertaining and touching, since he is an eccentric and peculiar comedian, but he manages to make you glue your eyes to the screen. Also the soundtrack is a marvel, including songs from bands like Led Zeppelin, AC/DC or The Doors (and there is also one of my favorites, the song "Edge of Seventeen" by Stevie Nicks). I also thank Jack Black's character immensely for this tremendous graphic that tells us about the history of rock:

Está demás decir que es una de mis películas favoritas de los 2000’s y dudo que su esencia sea algo fácil de replicar en la actualidad. Además, tener a Jack Black como protagonista es algo que sin dudas hace a esta película entretenida y conmovedora, puesto que es un comediante excéntrico y peculiar, pero que logra hacerte pegar tus ojos a la pantalla. Además la banda sonora es una maravilla, incluyendo canciones de bandas como Led Zeppelin, AC/DC o The Doors (y también está una de mis favoritas, la canción “Edge of Seventeen” de Stevie Nicks). También le agradezco inmensamente al personaje de Jack Black por este gráfico tremendo que nos habla de la historia del rock:

And finally, as I mentioned at the beginning, I can't fail to mention what made me love this movie the most from the first moment I saw it: it's admiration, love and appreciation for rock, showing us that anyone can be part of its world and enjoy it, no matter the origin or what you do for a living; here everyone is welcome and needed. Y por último, así como mencioné al principio, no puedo dejar de mencionar lo que más me hizo amar a esta película desde el primer momento en que la vi: es admiración, amor y aprecio al rock, mostrándonos que cualquiera puede ser parte de su mundo y disfrutar de él, sin importar el origen o a qué te dediques; aquí todo el mundo es bienvenido y necesario.
