How objective can justice be?: "White Bear" from "Black Mirror" (T2:E2). (ENG/ESP).

Review by @divinojupiter · 1116d · of White Bear

"Black Mirror" is a rather twisted, satirical and innovative series. When I watch one of its episodes, I get caught by such an unsettling feeling thinking that many of its stories could be quite real (and of them many episodes are critical analogies of social phenomena that are already happening), and it is that same feeling that I felt the first time I saw the episode I will tell you about, moreover, no matter how much time passes, whenever I watch it that uneasiness haunts me. "White Bear" is episode 2 of the 2nd season of the series, and it tells us the story of Victoria.

Who is Victoria? As it turns out, she doesn't know herself, and along with her, we suffer a very serious memory loss that leaves us in the uncertainty of not knowing why she is where she is, how she got there, or why she is there. All we know is that Victoria is disoriented, hurt, and in a house that we might assume is hers, because it is there, but has nothing personal except for a photo of a little girl that Victoria takes to be her daughter. If at the moment this whole situation is desperate, Victoria goes out into the street where there is no one else but her, or yes there is someone else... There are many people in fact, but they are all behind their phones recording her as if they were in a reality show. Victoria asks for help, and nobody helps her, because it is as if she were nothing more than a dying animal in a media circus.

We are also passive spectators of everything that happens to Victoria, but unlike the people who follow her everywhere with their phones, we can also feel like those caged animals waiting for the next thing to happen. Did I already said that the situation was desperate? Well, let's add to that that Victoria is chased by a masked man who wants to kill her, and she has no choice but to run and ask for help from people who don't laugh, don't scream, don't answer; they just record her. After so much running, they meet a couple of friends who seem to be different from the rest, because they do listen to her, but after another violent and disconcerting event as can be seen from the beginning of the episode, Victoria and the woman who accompanies her, who we will know as Jem, escape together into the forest.

Everything that awaits us in the forest watching these two women escape will make sense as they go along. There will still remain the doubt of why Victoria is there, but we will know from Jem that people are so under the influence of a transmission signal that appeared on the televisions of each house, and they are part of that immune group that was not affected by the signal, however, being immune has awakened in people their baser and violent instincts, becoming sadists who seek to kill and have fun with it, something like the idea that we are raised in the saga of "The Purge": a series of stories where we follow a country where its government makes crime legal for 24 hours, so that in those 24 hours the kindest and most naive neighbor can become the cruelest murderer.

What makes this episode chilling and magnificent is not the chase Victoria is subjected to, not knowing what the reasons behind it are, let alone knowing who she is. No, that's the least of it, although seeing her in that situation is what keeps you flooded with suspense, but the plot twist is at the end, where every little detail will make sense and our perception of who the victim is will be abruptly transformed. Now, although it is not my intention to detail the ending, I do want to leave my comment regarding one of what I consider to be one of the best episodes of the intriguing and controversial Black Mirror. The whole plot leaves us with a show of punishment and justice that brings with it a test of our ideals about the morals and ethics of society, and of ourselves as participants within it.

It is not that the intention of "White Bear" is to give us a moral lesson, since after all, it is a product to consume that can be lost in the infinity of things we consume directly and indirectly on a daily basis, but there is no denying that it is disturbing because it places us as irresponsible and morbid executioners, in the face of crimes where loyalty to ethics is more flexible and changeable than punishment becomes an act of pleasure, and the law becomes capricious and turns into anarchy disguised as justice, or sadism as well. The darkest thing of all is that our empathy is so decisive when we must point to a culprit, sometimes more than being governed by the established laws. Society, a product of the cancellation phenomenon, is increasingly intransigent with the punishments attributed to each subject for their crimes or morally reprehensible acts, and so we leave blind justice that becomes pure brute vengeance.

Torture was part of many methods in the old days to punish, and while we sometimes want to think it's something we've left behind, the truth is that it's still more present than ever. With "White Bear," you find yourself conflicted about empathizing with someone who then takes you out of your comfort zone because they have committed atrocities, but it also turns your stomach to think about how we can be morbid bystanders who enjoy cruelty and instead of doing justice, execute. And execution is hardly ethical. Many will think that everything that happens is nothing more than divine justice, and that sometimes the authorities fail us and we must make criminals pay for their misdeeds with our own hands... I can only think of what would be left of us if in the process of fighting monsters, it is right that we become one.
