This movie is just straight-up awful. I went from Brother Bear, a movie that felt like it was trying and failing to be a Disney movie, to a movie that doesn't even feel like it was trying to be that. There isn't going to be any deep analysis here, because the movie isn't deep enough to warrant that. There isn't even going to be any real talk about how this fits into the Disney filmography, because quite frankly this doesn't even feel like a Disney Knock. This is just going to be me tearing into this movie.
And to do that, I am going to summarize how the story is told. Song, Song, feel sad now, bad slapstick, bad slapstick, FEEL SAD DAMMIT!, more bad jokes, ect. There is no real-time dedicated to making every into actual characters, it's just solid streams of bad jokes and sad moments with nothing of substance to back it up. It expects you to care just because the movie wants to show you sad things happening. It's absolutely lazy writing.
I can't even give this movie credit for its animation, because while it's technically sound it just feels boring and lifeless. Even Brother Bear had some interesting things going on and looked good, this just looks entirely uninspired. I know I have given Disney some criticism for some of their past movies feeling like they just made them for the same of making movies, but even then there was at least some kind of passion behind them like they still wanted to make a good movie. I think this is the first time that is just entirely gone.
While I do like that I've started doing these Disney Reviews, in part to relive some old favorites as well as have a new appreciation for some of these movies I didn't have as a kid, but there is part of me that hates I'm sitting here watching movies like this and Brother Bear because they just aren't interesting movies to talk about. They are just kind of bad in obvious and uninteresting ways. All I can say is this, I mentioned in my Brother Bear review that the Disney magic was fading, but this movie was well and truly dead. The real question is whether or not it's ever going to come back.
