This is a show about two guys traveling to an obvious tourist trap in an attempt for Robby to turn around his bad luck, and Hatchi to escape a life of boredom and predictability. Escaping the grasp of the mafia by flying off in Robby's Penthouse/Space ship, they fight against intergalactic public relation firms, an extremely horny and obsessed mobster named Mr. Yang, giant eels, and a creature so adorable it strikes fear into all who see him. And they do some of this fighting in a lifesize and functional model of Hizakuriger, a giant robot from an obscure fifty-year-old anime. This Robot comes complete with a mustache and it's own theme music.
You may be looking at that description and be wondering what kind of show this even is. At its core, it's a comedy about two young men escaping their surroundings towards a goal that, in all honesty, doesn't really matter. What matters here is the thrill of the adventure leading there, since it's made pretty obvious from the very beginning that Isekander is pretty much a tourist trap, known to everyone but Robby. So the question is how are the episode by episode hijinks?
This show is utterly insane in all the best ways possible. Every episode sees them in a new part of the galaxy dealing with something that almost defies common sense, but it gets really hard to describe why without ruining the twist. That said, I will be spoiling one episode, the one where Hizakuriger makes its debut. Without spoiling something, it's hard to let you know what you're in for.
As the duo tries to escape from Mr. Yang, they discover two ships that can fuse together to forge Hizakuriger, an operational giant robot. Thinking they figured out how to fire a giant laser, and when it looks to be charging up Mr. Yang tries to avoid the potential blast. Yet all that happens is a goofy flash of light, not even blinding, from the chest. Kind of like what you would see from a child's toy, Since Yang dodged out of the way and was confused as to why nothing happened, Robby and Hatchi manages to make their escape.
That is probably the least silly thing to happen, but that is where the show really starts to kick off. Most episodes don't even involve Hizakuriger in any meaningful way, it's just kind of this large random thing they happen to have around for the sake of having some incredible scenes and jokes. The premise that this thing even exists is ridiculous, much like everything else in the show.
This is both to the shows benefit and its detriment. See, as mentioned before the show makes no attempt to convince you that their destination is anything other than a hoax. You know the destination is irrelevant from the get-go, and once it's established that the show is basically ruled by utter nonsense, you lose any sense of tension, and there is never really anything at stake in the show. While there are some great characters, and one or two moments that do actually ring sincere, the memories of this show aren't going to be anything profound, it's going to be 'This Yang Dude is seriously, seriously thirsty for some dick. He wants it more than any other character in the history of anime'. Don't get me wrong, that makes for a hilarious show, but it really does hold it back from being anything more than a good laugh you'll watch once, maybe another time down the road when you want to experience a bit of insanity with your friends.
It's not really very clever as it relies on shock twists, which also lessens the value if re-watching the show, but it's something I doubt anyone is going to regret watching at least once. If you are down of a bit of insanity and fun characters, give the show a go. Just don't go in expecting anything more than that.
