In 1994 Temuera Morrison became famous for the role of violent Maori man Jake Heke in powerful New Zealand drama Once Were Warriors. Five years later he repeated the role in its sequel What Becomes of the Broken Hearted?. The plot, again based on the novel by Alan Duff, takes place five years after Jake’s abuse led to his family abandoning him. He hasn’t changed his destructive lifestyle, and spends all his welfare checks and time in bars, often engaging in fights. Things change when his oldest son Nig (played by Julian Arahanga) dies in street gang violence and his younger brother Sonny (played by Clint Eurera) decides to avenge him by joining the rival gang. Jake decides to prevent Sonny suffer the same fate and, while doing so, begins to change his life and seek redepmtion. New film switches focus from the family life and position of Maoris within New Zealand society into the more generic themes of modern gangland violence, almost indistinguishable from 1990s Hollywood films depicting the plight of African American youth. This and direction by Ian Mune, who replaced Lee Tamahori, make What Becomes of the Broken Hearted? ultimately disappointing in inevitable comparisons with its predecessors. However, Morrison delivers another strong performance and manages to give solid impression of the entire film.

RATING: 6/10
