When Ridley Scott set out to make A Good Year, a 2006 romantic drama, he ventured into uncharted territory. Familiarity with the subject matter can be both a boon and a bane in filmmaking. In this case, Scott's connection to Peter Mayle, author of the original novel, and their shared Provence location might have informed the film's unusual tone. The result is one of Scott's more personal works, which also happens to be his first foray into comedy-romance.
The protagonist, Max Skinner (Russell Crowe), is a ruthless and successful market trader in London whose life takes an unexpected turn with the news of his uncle Henry's (played by Albert Finney) death. As the closest relative, Max inherits a villa and vineyard in Provence, where he reluctantly travels to settle the matter as quickly as possible and sell his inheritance. However, his plans are hampered by the lure of happy childhood memories and a budding romantic relationship with Fanny Chenal (Marion Cotillard), a local woman. Arrival of Christie Roberts (played by Abbie Cornish), young Californian oenologist who claims to be Henry’s illegitimate daughter, further complicates matter.
A Good Year is far removed from Scott's usual action or historical spectacles. The film has a light-hearted nature, which might have been intended as comedy but often feels more like an absence of tension. Despite this, it remains one of the most personal films in Scott's oeuvre. His friendship with Mayle and their shared love for Provence where they had proprety informed the story, making it a labour of love.
Scott's casting of Russell Crowe was inspired. The Gladiator star relished the opportunity to play a lighter, nearly comedic role. Crowe's performance, along with the rest of the cast, adds an undeniable charm to the film. Philippe Le Sourd's cinematography captures the stunning natural beauty of Southeastern France with great affection, making it easy for audiences to get swept up in the film's idyllic setting.
However, A Good Year is not without its flaws. Scott's comedy skills leave something to be desired, and the script feels formulaic and predictable at times. Additionally, the two-hour runtime feels overlong, likely due to Scott's love for his Provence surroundings. Despite these shortcomings, A Good Year remains an enjoyable, light-hearted cinematic experience that, while not perfect, is worth watching for its picturesque setting and charming performances.
