Word “expendable” was invented to describe people like two protagonists of Break of Dawn, 2002 French action film directed by Alexandre Arcady (originally titled Entre chiens and loups or “Betwen Dogs and Wolves”). Adrien (played by Richard Berry) is professional robber who is dying of cancer. Werner (played by Saïd Taghamaoui) is former Foreign Legion soldier and expert marksman who recently became suicidal. Both men are hired by shady but well-connected man named Radman (played by Joaquin de Almeida) in order to take part in staged assassination attempt on Romanian politician. The trick is that the attempt must look real, so both men are expected to be killed in attempt. They agree to this in exchange for money which is to paid to their loved ones. However, the operation doesn’t god as planned, so Adrien and Werner suddenly has to figure how and why things went wrong as they try to stay alive.
The script, written by Gregory Levasseur and Alexandre Aja (best known for his transgressive horror films), and based on the novel by Clyde Klotz, has an interesting premise, but it’s not developed in particularly intelligent manner. For director Alexandre Arcady, who has built his career on enthusiastic copying of popular Hollywood crime and action films, it served as an excellent excuse to provide content you might expect in films of Michael Bay. Those who don’t like action films to be too deep or too complicated will have reasons to be pleased. Arcady has more than solid cast at his disposal, including Richard Berry, with whom he has worked on many previous films. He also puts likeable Romanian locations to good use. Somewhat unusual and unexpected ending also compensates for many cliches in the rest of the film. Because of that Break of Dawn deserves recommendation, at least for fans of action cinema with lowered expectations.
