When major Hollywood production ends being exploitative, brainless but fun, it is very likely that its sequel will become exploitative, brainless, but not fun. This is conclusion you might get when you compare popular 2000 action comedy Charlie’s Angels with its 2003 sequel Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.

Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu repeat their roles as title characters Dylan Sanders, Natalie Cook and Lucy Liu– trio of female private detectives who work in Los Angeles agency run by mysterious and never seen Charlie Townsend (voiced by John Forsythe). The plot begins in Mongolia where Angels rescue U.S. Marshal (played by Robert Patrick), after which they are hired to help US Department of Justice recover titanium rings which contain one of government’s mostly guarded secrets – names and locations of people in Federal Witness Protection Program. During the course of investigation Dylan learns that Seamus O’Grady (played by Justin Theroux), one of her ex boyfriends and Irish mobster, might be involved. They will also have to deal with Madison Lee (played by Demi Moore), former Angel who became independent operative and now works for the highest bidder, including those on the opposite sides of law.

Full Throttle represents another embodiment of Hollywood’s unofficial rule that every sequel to summer blockbuster must be bigger and louder, with even more emphasis on style over substance. It helps if the director has previously embraced such ethos and McG, director of previous film known for his work on 1990s music videos, fits this criteria perfectly. Again, what he delivers is less a feature film with coherent plot and characters and more like a feature length music video. Barrymore, Diaz and Liu again seems to have fun in front of cameras, but there are additions to the cast that, despite their talent and stellar presence, don’t add much to the film, like completely all but forgettable Theroux. Some actors actually make the film worse by their presence despite displaying their talents. Crispin Glover repeats the role of assassin nicknamed Thin Man, despite the character being killed in previous film, while Bernie Mac, who plays Jimmy Bosley, Charlie’s second hand man, only reminds the audience of Bill Murray, who played Bosley’s adopted brother in previous film, being absent. Demi Moore plays one of the last roles of her career that emphasised her sex appeal, but she does it a little bit too seriously and compromises the general playfulness that could have made Full Throttle a proper guilty pleasure like its predecessors. Despite predictable success at the box office, flaws of the film were more apparent that before earning this film Razzie for Worst Sequel and Moore a Razzie for Worst Supporting Actress. There were plans for new sequels, but those were abandoned. Instead, came the rebooted and short-lived TV series in 2011 and disapppinting 2019 feature film Charlie’s Angels.
