Person’s ability to discover even some of the most obvious facts can be hampered by genes, character traits or circumstances. One example can be found in the protagonist of Corky Romano, 2001 comedy directed by Rob Pritts. Plot begins when Francis A. “Pops” Romano (played by Peter Falk), elderly boss of mafia family, finds himself in serious trouble after FBI found incriminating evidence about illegal activities that could put him away for a long time. The only way to prevent this is to destroy said evidence through a trusted person that could infiltrate FBI. Two of his sons – Paulie (played by Peter Berg) and Peter (played by Chris Penn) – are already known, so alternative must be found in their brother Corky (played by Chris Kattan). Corky is black sheep of the family, a clumsy man who makes ends meet as veterinarian technician and doesn’t have a clue what his father and brothers do for a living. Thankfully, that means that FBI also doesn’t have a clue about him. He agrees to help his family, gets new identity and uses it to become part of elite team of agents. What was supposed to be a quick mission, however, gets complicated, but Corky’s lack of training is mistaken for unconventional methods by his FBI peers, especially after he inadvertently helps solving some cases. As time goes by, Corky begins like his time in FBI, especially after he meets charming female agent Kate Russo (played by Vinessa Shaw).
Made with low budget, Corky Romano had solid but not too impressive results at the box office, while being savaged by critics. The latter wasn’t that surprising, because Corky Romano had been produced by Robert Simonds, producer known for Adam Sandler films, notorious among critics’ establishment. Like many Hollywood comedies of its time, this film relies on “high concept” at the expense of everything else, with script being collection of cliches. The cast mostly doesn’t appear to be too enthusiastic. The only exception seems to be Chris Kattan, who gives impression that he was having a time of his life on the set. Charming Vinessa Shaw also provides some bright moments, at least for certain segments of the audience, in scenes where she wears sexy nurse uniform. Those bright moments are, however, too few and far in between to make Corky Romano into anything other than merely passable.
