Fate can be very cruel to some people, like to the protagonist of Eye of the Storm, 1991 thriller directed by Yuri Zeltser. The plot begins with two boys witnessing their parents being brutally murdered. Steven, one of the boys, got blinded during the incident and ten years later, as a grown man (played by Bradley Gregg) lives in rundown motel run at the edge of Nevada desert, run by his overprotective brother Ray (played by Craig Sheffer). Few people come to the motel and Ray for some reason likes it that way. So, when a Marvin Gladstone (played by Dennis Hopper) checks in with his young trophy wife Sandra (played by Lara Flynn Boyle) after they got stranded on the way to Las Vegas, situation is to become tense. Marvin turns out to be constantly drunk and abusive and triggers the chain of events that would end in bloodshed.
Shot with relatively low budget, Eye of the Storm was made in US-German co-production, with one of the executive producers being Roland Emmerich, soon to be known for spectacular Hollywood blockbusters. The film features good cinematography by Emmerich’s associate Karl Walter Lindenlaub and very strong beginning featuring Ally Walker, one of the most underrated actresses of her generation. But a strong potential is quickly wasted because of the script that mixes Psycho iconography with unconvincing melodrama and rather predictable violent ending. Even the presence of formidable character actor of Dennis Hopper and sex appeal of Lara Flynn Boyle can’t compensate for film flaws, which are even more apparent when Eye of the Storm is compared with Red Rock West, another and definitely better film in which those two appeared together.
