Race and ethnicity seem to be the only things that matter in today’s America. This, of course, wasn’t exactly new phenomena and racial and ethnic divisions found their way even into the scripts of Hollywood romantic comedies. An example can be found in Fools Rush In, 1997 film directed by Andy Tennant.
The script by Katherine Reeback is partially based on the true story of Doug Draizin and Anna Maria Davis, couple who credited among producers of the film. The plot begins when Alex Whitman (played by Matthew Perry), WASP who earns his leaving as manager in New York-based construction company, comes to Las Vegas on business. There he meets and has passionate romance with Mexican American photographer Isabel Fuentes (played by Salma Hayek). The liaison is one-night stand but it results in pregnancy. Three months later Isabel tells Alex about it and he impulsively reacts by marrying her. The marriage soon turns out to be challenging because Alex and Isabel not only have different religions, belong to different cultures and have different world views, but also have different priorities in life.
Basing the premise of romantic comedy on ethnic and cultural differences looked refreshing for oversaturated genre scene of 1990s Hollywood. It also looked like a good idea for Matthew Perry, who was trying to transcend beyond his role of Chandler in Friends. It also looked like a good idea for Salma Hayek, who was at the time on the path of Hollywood stardom. The idea was realised in satisfactory manner, but only in the first half of the film, with number of funny gags and Perry putting some of his comedic skills to good use. Unfortunately, as the plot progressed, cliches began to multiply and what could have been an interesting comedy became merely watchable.
