In late 1990s and early 2000s Hollywood was trying to woo younger audience by having classic Shakespeare’s plays adapted into contemporary teen-themed films. One of the more interesting representatives of the trend was Get Over It, 2001 musical drama directed by Tommy O’Haver.
The plot is very loosely based on Shakespeare’s comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Protagonist, played by Ben Foster, is Berke Landers, high school student whose girlfriend Allison McAllister (played by Melissa Sagemiller). He took it very hard, but his best friends Felix Woods (played by Colin Hanks) and Dennis Wallace (played by Sisqó) try to help him get new girlfriend. Berke is, however, determined to win Allison back and intends to do it by taking part in school’s A Midsummer’s Night’s Rocking Eve, musical adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, written and directed by pompous drama teacher Dr. Desmond Forest Oates (played by Martin Short). The problem is that he lacks any acting or singing talent, but Felix’s sister Kelly (played by Kirsten Dunst) helps him prepare. As rehearsals go on, Berke not only gains theatrical skills but also realises that he is attracted to Kelly.
Get Over It isn’t deep nor particularly memorable film. The script by R. Lee Fleming Jr. is full of cliches and predictability, and the plot looks very much like the plot of She’s All That, one of many forgettable teen comedies made at the time. The critics and audience seemed to agree with that impression, leading to mixed reviews and poor results at the box office. However, those who watch Get Over It without high expectations will have much favourable view. Director Tommy O’Heaver appears eager to compensate the content limitations with more imaginative style. This might be seen at the very beginning, during the surreal musical number. O’Heaver also employs young, diverse and very enthusiastic cast. This includes Kirsten Dunst at the height of her popularity; the young actress not only acts and sings good, but also delivers certain fan service in the scene when she appears in swimsuit. Her performance is helped by Ben Foster, with whom she was in romantic relationship during the production. Martin Short is also very good in the role of self-important drama teacher. Mila Kunis also appears in one of her early film roles. Their performances are also helped with likeable music soundtrack. Although hardly a classic, Get Over It is sufficiently entertaining for its hour and half to pass very smoothly for most of the audience.
