Long tradition of law enforcement officers sacrificing their family and mental health for the sake of their job is maintained through the protagonist of Ignition, 2001 Canadian action thriller directed by Yves Simoneaux. US Marshall Conor Gallagher (played by Bill Pullman) has dealt with the job-related stress by pill-popping and that ultimately cost him wife and daughter. He is given seemingly routine assignment of protecting federal judge Faith Matheson (played by Lena Olin) who has recently began receiving threats from right-wing extremists. Matheson can’t stand her new bodyguard but two of them soon realise that the threats are quite serious and that the only way to stop potential assassins is to reveal their true motive. They begin to investigate the matter privately and that leads to the top levels of military and political establishment in Washington, DC. Matheson has apparently in an unrelated case stumbled onto evidence that may reveal great conspiracy.

Script by William Davies sets protagonists against what is now known as Deep State, which isn’t exactly original concept and was much used since 1970s conspiracy thrillers. Despite the lack of originality and use of cliches (including turning persecuted protagonist into persecutor), Ignition is well made thriller that rises above its relatively low budget and direct-to-video reputation. It is directed by Yves Simoneuax, Canadian director who had made some notable work on television, like miniseries Napoleon and Emmy-awarded film Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. Here he uses Vancouver locations that are quite familiar to the fans of The X-Files, as well as some of that series’ cast, including Nicholas Lea. Bill Pullman, although not usually associated with action genre, handles his role well, while the action scenes themselves are handled in more than satisfactory manner. Despite predictable ending, Ingnition is solid film that can be recommended to the audience with expectations not being too high.

RATING: 5/10 (++)
